I wouldn't worry about the height in itself but I would keep an eye on the weight / height relationship. If he's consistently significantly higher on the weight centile than the height one than he isn't a healthy weight for some reason and that may need to be addressed. But bear in mind kids grow in leaps and bounds, so just keep an eye and look for longer term trends, not individual measurements. Speak to your health visitor or gp in you're still concerned in six months.

Bubbletrouble43 · 28/06/2020 20:33

One of my twins isn't even on 25th centile. I'm 5'3 and my mum is 5"1, her mum was 4'11. Her twin is on 50th centile and the difference is getting noticeable. I don't think it's a cause for concern as such.

TiggeryBear · 28/06/2020 20:39

I have 2DC. My eldest (age 4) is very tall - 95th+ centile so by comparison DC2 (age 2) is very small - on 25th centile. They are very different builds & very different children.

I'm tiny but had a very very tall child 98th centile - other children kept assuming she was a couple of years older than she was until she was about 16!

Just tell random people he's a year younger than his actual age and he's just advanced GrinWink my eldest was short (different Dad) and did have advanced speech/language - it surprised a lot of people when this child that looked 12 months old had the language skills of most 4 year olds 😂

It all evens out over the years...

25th centile isn't particularly short so those people are odd!

DSD was only 93cm when she turned 3. DS is 2.10 and 90cm. They have both been smaller than lots of their peers, but not all, and both have summer birthdays so the other kids in DSD's school year are up to a year older. DP is only 5 foot 9 too so we wouldn't have expected them to be tall. Your DS sounds totally normal OP!

Thneedville · 28/06/2020 20:54

That’s not small, it’s well within normal range.

My DS was just above the 0.4th centile at that age. People generally didn’t think he was small, just assumed he was a genius (“that baby can talk!!”) .

He’s now above the 9th centile at age 9, so he’s getting there. It doesn’t bother him, despite having a giant brother who’s only one school year older.

Cotswoldmama · 28/06/2020 20:59

My eldest was premmie and he's 25th percentile for height and 9th for weight by second son born on time is 98th percentile for both! There's 3 years and 3 days between them and I don't think it'll be long until my youngest is the same height as my eldest!
I was one of the shortest in my class and now I'm just above average. There were two really tall girls in my class one went on to be nearly 6ft the other ended up being about 5ft 3!

MsMeNz · 28/06/2020 21:05

He is smaller than average but not a perfect indicator of adult height. I think there are some strong but not 100 percent actuate colerations between height at age 3 and adult height but it's not exact science!

My kids are odd, two are in the 95th percent nfor height and middle child about 70th. Which is werid as me and my DH are distinctly averageish I'm 5 5 4 and husband is 5 9 must be through back genetics as no one is tall in our family.

Figmentofimagination · 28/06/2020 21:25

My son is 3.1 and when we measured him at age 3 he was 83cm. He's always been small (was born at 42 weeks at 6lbs), grew 6cm between the ages of 1 and 2 and a further 6cm between 2 and 3. He's also small in weight (11kg). People constantly comment on his height.
However he eats sooo much (2 lunches at nursery the other day) and is very active.
He was under paediatrician care from birth till age 2 and they were never worried about his height or weight. He is just small like my family (I was only a 3cms taller at his age) as the tallest male is 5ft 6 and the tallest female (me) is 5ft 2.

Juliehooligan · 28/06/2020 21:32

As long as he is healthy it’s nobody’s business if he is small or not, look at Tyson Fury, he was born prem, and now he’s like a mountain!

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 28/06/2020 21:44

My mum went to the doctors, 50 years ago, to make an appointment as she’d seen me next to a school friend and thought I was too tall.
At the surgery she met the school friend’s mother, who’d seen us together and thought her daughter was too small.
They both forgot about the appointments and went home.

HalloumiSalad · 28/06/2020 21:48

Just a thought... but most film stars are shorter than average as the body proportions looks better on the screen... He's just destined for stardom that's all.

Zoflorabore · 28/06/2020 21:54

There is a boy who joined my dd’s class late ( during year 2 ) who looked like he belonged in reception. He is actually the oldest in the class with a very early September Birthday and is by far the smallest.

Currently they’re in year 4 so when they go back in September he will be 10. I remember hearing his mum having a right go at another mum for commenting on his size and was basically saying he’s got a complex. I’ve not seen the dad but the mum is well under 5ft.

I’m not sure whether people talk about height like they do about weather ie to make small talk. I doubt there’s malice involved but I suppose when it’s your child then it must be annoying.

irecitethegruffaloinmydreams · 29/06/2020 11:58

The difference between him and an average height 3 year old boy is 3 cm, so no, he is not that tiny. My daughter is similar - 93 cm at 3 and 1 month. She is certainly smaller than some kids her age and it is commented on, particularly as she is quite slim too, but with small parents she was never going to be a bruiser.

But if there is a big difference between his height and weight centiles, it might be worth keeping an eye on (although between 2 and 3 I think they do shoot up in height a bit and slim down).

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 29/06/2020 18:13

@Jumblebumblemess Same here. DS is 108cm at 3y3m and in 4-5 clothes. Everyone comments on it. People just love any point of difference 🙄

Yes, well. When you’re the one being talked about it’s even more annoying.
