Travelling with baby - sleeping options

We are thinking to brave it and go on a holiday. So far maternity has been so depressing with the lock down, it feels like a break would us all good.

Our baby is nearly 6m and we haven't travelled with her yet. I wonder how people do with sleeping arrangements if there is no baby cot at the place where you stay. One option is of course for her to sleep with us. But now that she is more mobile (crawling already and rolling in her sleep) it has actually been hard to sleep together for both of us, she wakes up if she tries to roll and bumps into me Grin. So, would you put your baby that small on a mattress which is on the floor (like a Montessori bed) in your room? I am thinking to have pillows or soft surfaces all around in case she falls off at night. But I'm worried if she wakes up and starts crawling around, putting things in her mouth.

What did you do with your babies?

Take a travel cot. That's what they are for :o

You maybe mean abroad? But here I take a travel cot or make sure there is a cot. Then take a travel mattress.

Most places have travel cots, if not you can bring one easily enough. Most airlines allow 2 pieces of baby equipment, some allow unlimited. I wouldn't put a 6 month old on the floor

BTW, something I didn't realise - the portable/folding mattresses you can buy for travel cots aren't actually recommended for safety reasons. The baby can roll and become trapped between the mattress and the mesh sides of the cot. We bought one and used it (with no incident) before we realised this, but I wouldn't use one for a baby under a year now I don't think. The travel cot mattresses are thin but babies don't find them uncomfortable. Just take a cot sheet to put over it so it isn't cold as they are plastic.

Rent a cot? Thats usually available.

We have one of these. We have traveled all over the world with a baby, we started travelling at 8 weeks.

We have one of these and it's great. Vast majority of places you stay will have a cot and we popped this inside. Has the added bonus of having a mosquito net with it too.

Thank you everyone! Super useful to hear people's experiences, as I have no idea how travel with my LO. We have spent most of her life in lockdown!

@Theyweretheworstoftimes , this is perfect! Much better than mattress on floor...

I think it depends on how she is used to sleeping at home. If you think she would be happiest sleeping in a cot, take a travel cot, request one from the holiday let, or hire one while you are away. I am assuming you are thinking a UK holiday. If you'll be driving, it's easy enough to take what you need with you. Or look to book somewhere that will provide a cot. We've been lots of places that set up a full size normal cot for us.

Personally, I don't think travel cots are all that nice and I find them a bit of a pain to use. We've always co-sleep at home so we just do that when away. But when they hasn't been possible, yes, just a mattress on the floor (away from the wall or other hazards) has worked fine.
