Follow on milk?

Looking to wean my 5 month old off the breast onto formula when she's 6/7 months old. What's the difference between first milk and follow on milk?
Which one do I put her onto to as not sure on the difference or if I need to give her follow on milk?
ThankyouSmile

They can advertise follow-on milk but are banned from advertising “first” formula. That’s why they invented it. Clever marketing ploy.

There’s no need whatsoever to use follow-on milk. Just use the standard formula until she’s old enough for plain cow’s milk🤗

Follow on milk is allowed to be advertised, first milk is not - seriously, that is the difference. My NCT teacher (ex-midwife) said that if you're using formula then first milk will have everything they need whatever age.

Follow on milk is not advised my HV as the protein can be harder to digest. Follow on milk is cheaper and it can be advertised.

We never switched from first milk, as above our HV advised not too so DD had this until she was one then onto full fat cows milk.

Don’t listen to all the above nonsense. Follow on milk has the protein ratio adjusted slightly to make it less filling as it’s intended for babies who are eating food. You can give either first milk or follow on milk past 6 months but follow on milk is more suitable and cheaper. Please don’t listen to nonsense from HV that the “protein” is hard to digest in follow on milk - it’s the same (milk) protein as in the first milk just less of it.

There’s are lot of anti formula dogma in the NHS (although usually restricted to midwives and HV rather than drs or pediatricians). If you’re not breastfeeding, follow on milk is a very healthy drink/food for your baby- probably the healthiest thing they will drink.

Also formula is much better for your infant that cow’s milk. It’s super fucked up that the anti formula dogma has gone so far that HV are recommending an inferior food.

One thing atm if cost is an issue is to start them on a supermarket brand formula. It will be just as good and much better than cows milk (which should never be given to under 12 months).

First infant milk is fine. Ours is still on it now at nearly 1yo (won't be for much longer!).
