Hi everyone
So my 3 year old 4 next week has had three chocking episodes in the last 3 weeks, today was quite bad and it's really stressing me out! Is there something it could be? Or anything I can do?

How horrible! I have a huge fear of children choking! What foods was it each time? Do they sit at the table and eat? I would just sit next to them while they eat and remind them to eat slowly. So many children keep stuffing in food without realising they can't swallow that much in one go lol!

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 25/06/2020 19:33

What are they choking on? Make sure you're cutting all food up properly and that they're only eating sitting down at the table. Supervise carefully! Maybe encourage them to count chews and eat more slowly?

When you say choking, do you mean gagging or actually cannot breathe and needs assistance?

If it is choking, I would try get a GP to see your child, especially if it hasnt happened before.

The first time was grapes ( cut into 4 length ways) then today it was a cone with some mallow topping. He only has a tiny bite gone from it !

Are you sure it was choking not gagging?

I have a 3 year old and would be wanting a medical check if this had happened 3 times. My DC has never come close to choking and so it would be very unless and make me want it investigated to happen 3 times in a few weeks.

Addler · 25/06/2020 19:45

Not sure if that posted. But this may be useful as there is a distinction

OP my dc used to choke on things like this when they were little. They couldn’t eat grapes no matter how many pieces you cut it into, couldn’t eat chicken or meat, apple was a big no. I was so terrified that I just stopped it altogether. They are now teenagers and eat everything. I think some children just don’t get the art of chewing and takes them longer than others. It’s a shame because I would see children younger than them chewing away happily on fruit without any problems and they were about 5/6 and still couldn’t get it. But better safe than sorry.

Maybe it's more gagging but it's seems like It's stuck like today I whacked his back and he he was still trying to bring something up

Always worth asking a GP for reassurance.

Maybe they have swallowed something that is lodged causing an issue?

Get him checked out. Dd used to be very chokey and was investigated for aspirating. She wasn't though and grew out of it. I had a friend who's ds has enlarged tonsils and had issues swallowing food too

My ds had this. It was his tonsils, he always suffered with them but at this point (he wasn't ill with them) they were so large they were touching which made his throat smaller, he was panicking he was choking but actually it was just the sensation of the food struggling to go down. He had them out.

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 25/06/2020 20:35

Have a look in his throat op you'll be able to see if it's tonsils. My ds tonsils looked like something from alien lol
