My son just ate his own poo

We've had a great morning, thought we'd round it off by getting the paddling pool out this afternoon.

It's usually a pretty low stress activity for us parents. One-year-old is happy to sit in it filling up his beakers with his watering can while we look on.

In the nanoseconds it took me to turn around and get my bag he had pooed, had it in his hand and was bringing it to his mouth. I'm not sure if any of it actually went in but he definitely had some his lip.

Cue poo chaos. I dislodged poo from hand and poured a beaker of water around his mouth to get the poo off his lip and if any, poo out of his mouth. He then, understandably shocked, reached out to me smearing the poo that was left on his hand over my boobs and chin. I now smell of shit while he happily plays bathed and in a nappy. Husband fishing poo out of paddling pool.

Didn't want to use up one of our water nappies... won't make that mistake again. Guessing he'll be ok?!

Don't worry. He will be absolutely fine!

My dd did this once as a 10 month year old (again not exactly sure how much, if any, went in). I was a bit panicked at the time and rang my paediatrician (not in UK) and she reassured me that it was totally fine, quite a common occurrence, and not to worry at all.

He’ll be fine

Studycast · 25/06/2020 16:54

Sorry, meant to add, she was indeed totally fine afterwards! No ill effects whatsoever!

Ah, parenting. No one warns you about the smeared-in-shit type of days...

SundayGirlB · 25/06/2020 17:08

He looked pretty disgusted at least.

I think that's something most babies do at some point.
falling off the bed/sofa is another one...

NataliaOsipova · 25/06/2020 17:11

A fine parenting moment to remember and cherish 😂. My own particular favourite was when my older DD was walking round with her sister’s poo in her hair. I felt I was winning at the mummy thing that day....!

sandieshaw · 25/06/2020 17:12

Yep, it happened to mine. I freaked out about him catching e-coli or similar but in reality he was absolutely fine. And now we just wind him up by re-telling the story every now and again Grin

Fairybatman · 25/06/2020 17:17

When mine was small he did a poo in his nappy in the middle of the night. When I opened the nappy the poo rolled off the mat and slid down the change table onto the floor. In my horribly sleep deprived state I picked it up and put it back on the nappy with my hand. Whilst I was frantically pulling baby wipes out the pack with my teeth trying not to spread shit everywhere DS reached out and stuck his finger in it and wiped it all over himself.

I was winning that night.

Disgusting

Disgusting

Absolutely agree.

SundayGirlB · 25/06/2020 17:32

@GreyGardens88 yep, but seems many people have been there! I felt pretty horrified about it to be honest but then thought you have to see the funny side otherwise you'd crack. I would at least.

It is disgusting but it happens to so many parents

youwereagoodcakeclyde · 25/06/2020 17:36

Disgusting - but the risk is to you being mildly mentally scarred rather than him physically unwell.

RedLemon · 25/06/2020 17:36

😂 Class. My version was DD pottering in to the kitchen one day holding her hand aloft and proudly announcing “POO HAN!”.

It happened on the same day smeared her face and dress with sudocrem. Fun times.

2020nymph · 25/06/2020 17:37

My disgusting DS did that yesterday! He has been fine today.

Strawberrywaffles · 25/06/2020 17:39

Well yes it’s obviously disgusting!

DD has nearly done this but fortunately didn’t put it in her mouth. I remember when she pooed on the floor during potty training and I accidentally stood in it. It was everywhere, I started gagging almost being sick! The joys of parenting!

piccalilliLily · 25/06/2020 17:41

Stealth boast.
DS once ate a cat poo.
He's 25 now so it is survivable.

AddressLabel · 25/06/2020 17:41

My son always grabs for his bits as soon as you take his nappy off resulting in poo smears quite regularly if you don’t grab his hands in time. He has recently started trying to put his finger up his bum as well. Thankfully he has yet to try and eat his own poo!

SundayGirlB · 25/06/2020 17:46

@AddressLabel oh yes, we get the grabbing at poopy bits too. I'll wait for rhe finger up the bum then!

Aren't they little joys?

sudocream in hair is also a good one

Samtsirch · 25/06/2020 18:05

This all sounds a bit off to me.😁

PeacefulInTheDeep · 25/06/2020 18:35

We have a reusable swim nappy, but I understand the disposable ones can be re-used if they've not been pooed in. Might save you some stress next time OP!

Ha ha, My DS ate puppy poo when he was 9 months. I just wiped his mouth out with the dishcloth. He's also coming up 25 😂
whatshebininagain · 25/06/2020 18:50

Threw the dishcloth in the washing - didn't wash the rest of the dishes obvs 😁
