How likely that my baby will need glasses?

DH and I are both quite shortsighted, both wear glasses and have done since childhood. DH also has an astigmatism in one eye. Is it basically a given that our son will need glasses by the time he starts school? Also, at what age do babies have their first eye test to check for any vision issues?

DS1 was picked up at the by the standard eye test about when he started school, and has worn glasses ever since. We also had to do some patching, which has helped.

Myself and DH are shortsighted, my prescription is stronger than his.
At several months old I noticed a turn in DS eye. We were referred to the hospital where they checked his eyes and gave him a prescription for being long sighted. He has a fairly high prescription, as does my DF. (DM shortsighted) My siblings don’t wear glasses. My DSis kids don’t wear any glasses, my DBro has one child who is short sighted and 3 that don’t need glasses so, despite there being genes for short sightedness, DS has a similar long sighted prescription to my DF & it’s just totally random in my family.

We’re both shortsighted. Dd1 discovered she couldn’t see properly about a year ago at the age of nearly 12 and now wears glasses. Dd2 was picked up in reception and has subsequently been treated for a lazy eye and wears glasses for longsightedness. I was exactly the same: glasses as a very small child for a lazy eye and squint, then developed shortsightedness as a teen.

Dd1 was really annoyed about needing glasses but soon got used to being able to actually see so doesn’t mind now. Dd2 has worn then since she was 4 (she’s nearly 10) so really no bother for her.

My 2 year old is currently waiting for an appointment to come through for an eye test because he seems to have a squint like me. His DF has almost perfect vision but I've had glasses since age 2

I'm quite shortsighted (-7D) and my wife was somewhat (-3D from memory). Both of my DSs (13 and 16) are checked annually and both have pretty much normal eyesight.
