Been to the Dr.s this morning with DS1 (7) about his bed wetting (still every night - and several times a night too). I've been told that we have to try one of these alarms first to see if it will work before any other help will be offered.

TBH I'm skeptical about how well it will work - we've tried setting a normal alarm clock for him to wake up and do a wee (just before the sort of time when he first wets the bed)....but he usually just sleeps though it.....and it was LOUD.

However, I'm wanting to try and help him so I'm prepared to give it a go. But I want to know what sort of success you've had with them, and where I can find a reasonably priced one.

pottytrainingsolutions.com/shop/?cPath=40
if this link doesn't work its pottytrainingsolutions.com and look under mattress covers.
They are really expensive though and you'd have to pay import tax and shipping.
My auntie hired one years ago as my cousin (aged 10) wanted to go on scout camp but he still wet the bed and this worked within about 5 nights.
Perhaps your hv might know where you can hire one if this is still an option these days?

I am amazed your dr just gave this advice without arranging for you to borrow an alarm. Most surgeries have an enuresis clinic, or links with one at a local hospital. Speak to a health visitor who may know more. I hired one for the princely sum of £1 from our nhs surgery.

Dr. was quite adamant that we'd have to sort our own out. Although I'm thinking that perhaps going through the school nurse may be a better option (or health visitor).

TBH I'm very skeptical that it's going to work for him - he's an incredibly heavy sleeper.
