Hair on babies forehead and above lip. Is this normal.

My 4 and a half month old baby boy has always had hair like this on his forehead and upper lip.
Everytime I see it, I feel concerned.
I have attached pics.

I wouldn’t be too concerned. 4 and a half months is still very young and lots of babies are born hairier than that. One of mine had long downy hair all over his back and tufts ears -he’s grown into a normal 9 year old with no resemblance to a werewolf. I also had an exceptionally bald version, who barely grew a hair in his head before he was 1. My third is just outgrowing the monobrow she born with, and she’s nearly 2. Still has hairy legs and a hairy back though!

I assume your concern is about hormones at this stage, and you could talk to your health visitor or GP about that, but I think they are mostly likely to tell you not to worry about this as it’s well within the range of normal...and is is more common in babies with darker hair and complexions too...

DC3dilemma · 19/06/2020 15:58

(He is absolutely gorgeous by the way, what dreamy eyes!)

Pippinlily · 19/06/2020 15:59

Speak to your Dr/health visitor if concerned at next appointment but I think it’s very normal. A form of Lanugo.

My baby girl’s back & shoulders were quite hairy at birth (Not premature, born at 38 weeks). I can’t remember when it ‘went/faded’ but we had definitely stopped noticing it by the time she was about 1.

Looks normal to me. Also, he is gorgeous!

ShouldWeChangeTheBulb · 19/06/2020 16:05

He a very handsome chap. The hair doesn’t look excessive to me. Are you anxious in general or just about this?

It is all terribly worrying the first time around. Most of the babies we see in media fit some unusual idealised aesthetic, when in fact they mostly have lots of funny little features related to birth, or just being a baby.

And it’s strange where the hang ups come in...i was ok with pfb’s hairy ears but one ear was an odd shape and I used to cup it while I was feeding him, willing it to unfurl into a more normal shape.

There was a big gap between him and his younger siblings though so by the time they came along I had some idea of how these things pass, and was prepared to enjoy these little markers of what is really a short time in their lives.

Gorgeous baby! Don't worry about a little bit of fluff, my middle one was an extra fluffy one, it soon disappeared. He has the most beautifully soft skin too. Enjoy your lovely little one!

YRGAM · 20/06/2020 19:15

Totally normal. My 5 month old boy grows a better moustache than I (m) do!

MrsRogerLima · 20/06/2020 19:16

Is your surname lupin op?

orangejuicer · 20/06/2020 19:17

He's beautiful.

ArriettyJones · 20/06/2020 19:18

Oh he’s lovely. Those eyes!

There’s a name for baby downy hair that falls out after a while but I’m blanking on it.

Hi Sarah,

I absolutely understand your concern.

My baby girl is 11 months old now and has the exact same forehead hair. She is white and has brown hair... her forehead hair is tiny but noticeable, she also has a little unibrow. This hairy part stops with the temple-brow line and does not go below. She lost all other lanugos on her body. Every time I look at her I wish this thing to go away. She is such a bright and strong girl, so I know how lucky we are... other mummies have to face bigger problems... but still, I just fear for my baby. I am also a first time mom :-)

Sara, can you update your post please, how is your baby's forehead? Did you talk to the pedi about this? I would greatly appreciate your answer.

And if anyone could write about their forehead lanugo story, that would be appreciated... I would like to hear exact months/years when your baby finally shed this part.

Sara, I also have to add that your baby is absolutely gorgeous!!

My son is 15 months old and still has it. We’re Indian and it’s very normal - it’s usually on faces / shoulders etc to be hairy until 5 or 6. Honestly I’m a bit surprised an Indian person created this thread Shock

Ploughingthrough · 13/03/2021 10:07

Completely normal especially for a child with darker skin. I've a very dark skinned DD who was super hairy, hairy ears, hairy shoulders, hairy back! Shes 8 now and has quite hairy legs and her back is still a bit hairy!
I live in a country where there is a significant Indian population and I would say it is very common for their DC to be hairier than caucasian children.

Hello,

my daughter is 18 months old, white and very hairy forehead just as you describe it. Her father is of an Indian origin. I really worry that it will not disappear in the upcoming years. Could you please let me know how your baby girl is doing? Believe that it is not lunago, I was told so many times by several doctors but it just doesn’t go away.

hope you see this post. Thanks and all the best

hanixo · 06/07/2023 09:14

Hey Danielle,
I’ve got the same issue! My child is 8.5 months now and has a hairy forehead and back. It’s not lunago it’s been there for ages!!! Has anyone done anything where they saw a difference?
thanks xx

Hiya, can you give an update? My 2 month old is exactly the same as how you’ve described your little girl! Thanks

Vikilol · 26/12/2023 09:52

Hi, can you please update what happened to you baby's forehead hair?

VVD · 25/02/2024 15:10

Hey,

My little one has the same issue - forehead is hairy down to the eyebrows. Anyone able to provide comfort and advise if their child had similar issues which they’ve now grown out of and around what age?

GentleWave · 20/01/2025 02:28

Hi, we are in the same boat and are worried about our kid getting bullied once in school. Ours is 15 months now, anyone with a ray of hope?
