Honey!!!

I've been a majorly bad mum. I knew babies weren't supposed to have honey but didn't even consider they shouldn't have honey roast ham! My little one has had it most weeks since 8 months. I've just suddenly twigged!
Is there anything I should do? He's never had any issues (he is now nearly 12 months!)

Honey carries a small risk of botulism, sure. But amount of honey on some honey roast ham is almost zero.

Haworthia · 18/06/2020 15:33

If your baby hasn’t caught botulism then you’re fine.

You WILL get flamed by the Mumsnet food police for giving your baby processed meat. Ignore that.

Wheresmycider · 18/06/2020 15:33

Wouldn't worry. Advice against honey is that it can contain a bacteria that a mature digestive system can handle but a babies cannot.
If it has been roasted on a ham that should have taken care of any microbes.
If your child hasnt been sick dont worry.

Botulism is caused by a bacteria that will have been killed by the roasting

Thanks all! I feel so stupid not to have even thought!

I think the honey is the least of the devils in the ingredients list on :
INGREDIENTS: Pork (98%), Honey (2.5%), Mineral Sea Salt, Brown Sugar, Stabilisers (Potassium Triphosphate, Sodium Triphosphate, Tetrapotassium Diphosphate), Caramelised Sugar Syrup, Antioxidant (Sodium Ascorbate), Preservative (Sodium Nitrite). [Ignoring the fact that someone at Tesco can't do maths ]

Check the ingredient on your ham and salt content needs also to be considered.

dobbyssoc · 19/06/2020 07:21

@LeGrandBleu the one we use has 1.5% honey. As he has 1/4 of a slice I don't feel that the salt content is any cause for concern. He has no added salt in any other of his meals or any salt at all for that matter so it will not push him anywhere near the limit for the day.

That's fine then. That amount of honey is unlikely to do any harm.

I KNEW a member of the baby police would be along to give OP a hard time about processed meat

mindutopia · 19/06/2020 12:03

Presumably the honey wasn't raw, and cooking kills botulism spores. However, it is highly unlikely that Tesco or whatever are using natural unprocessed honey in their honey roast ham. It's likely already been very processed for safety before even going on the ham. I've used honey in cooking (not uncooked/raw) with all of mine.

dobbyssoc · 19/06/2020 15:18

@Letsallscreamatthesistene to be honest it's such a battle to get him to eat any type of meat at all that I am grateful that he will eat the ham and sliced chicken Grin

As long as your baby is healthy and fed, then its all good. We're all just muddling through day by day!

midnightstar66 · 19/06/2020 19:01

Doesn't honey roast ham have every bit of life baked out of it? Ham by it's very nature is well cooked. I'm sure it's absolutely fine!
