My LO eats -

Breakfast - one spoonful
Lunch - 3 spoonfuls(if its soup)
One spoonful if its something she needs to chew on.
Later in the evening - 2 spoonfuls of yoghurt
Or 1-2 spoonfuls of mashed fruit.

Would be grateful if mums can share how much their LO eats just so I get a general idea of how we are doing?

Thank yo :)

How old are they?

Yorkiee · 16/06/2020 14:05

Hi @QforCucumber. Thank you for the reply. She is going to be 8 months next week.

Do you offer finger foods alongside as well? Is this the only solid food your child is eating?

Personally, and it really is individual, I'd be getting more variety and probably more meat/savoury in there and if possible let baby work away on their own. Milk feeds first of course but mine were definitely eating definite meals around then, pasta with salmon, potatoes and chicken, scrambled egg, fruits and vegetables of all kinds etc.

mynameiscalypso · 16/06/2020 14:12

We do BLW and I don't really track quantities but at 8 months, DS usually had a small bowl of porridge with fruit for breakfast and the other two meals were variations on what we had (pasta, risotto, curry, omelettes etc). Some days he has loads (last week he ate an adult sized portion of lasagne for lunch) and some days barely anything.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 16/06/2020 14:15

It varies baby to baby, DD was a picker until she was about 14 months, she would eat but was fussy about how much, she still has a smallish appetite at 3. DS on the other hand loves food, he is almost a year and will eat anything you give him and 9 times out of 10, finish it.

B - slice of toast with beans or scrambled egg, crumpet or porridge with some fruit
L - sandwich or bread sticks with dip with a yoghurt and some fruit
D - about a quarter of my portion of dinner

He has fruit and biscuits as snacks

Thanks for the replies. I do offer a variety and have something different for her everyday but with mashed food she seems to only take a tablespoon whereas if its pureed she can take 2-3 tablespoons. Takes ages to chew.

I give finger food now an then but she plays with it. :/

She alo is not a big fan of formula since birth and I rather she drinks that so I offer that first.

I will try and aim to get more in.. its the chewing part that takes ages.

@Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese thank you for sharing that!

Need to try toast with her.

It has been a struggle to feed her. She takes small amounts if formula so I have been feeding her throughout the day. Maybe I need to offer solids in small throughout the day too.

Honestly, it does take ages. I can sometimes watch DS take an hour to eat a piece of toast. It's very boring but it does get faster as they get more proficient at it!

Hercwasonaroll · 16/06/2020 14:23

Totally depends.

My first was like yours, barely ate anything. My second is wolfing down 3 meals a day at 6 months.

modge · 16/06/2020 14:25

It really does vary - I remember being given the advice to look at what they are over the course of a week, rather than per day, to get a sense of their food intake.

And yes, it takes ages to eat a meal! But the practice time is important and gradually they make less mess and eat more independently.

As long as they are following their growth charts, seem alert and healthy and have plenty of wet and dirty nappies then things should be okay. It's amazing how much things change from 8 to 12 months, when food takes more of an important role.

Yorkiee · 16/06/2020 15:01

Great thanks for the advice everyone!
Will get her to chew chew chew!

It's a shame baby clinic won't be be available for a very long - so I got told by gp practice this morning.

She last got weighed at 4 months.

Do you have scales at home? Weigh yourself and then weigh her and you. She should be having finger food.

mindutopia · 16/06/2020 21:00

Just offer her what you eat. It doesn’t matter if she eats it right now. It just matters that she’s practicing.

At that age, both of mine were eating fairly significant amounts of normal food (toast or porridge for breakfast, omelette or pasta for lunch, maybe lasagna for dinner). But they’d been doing that from 6 months. It takes a few months to get the hang of eating real food.

ZooKeeper19 · 17/06/2020 10:27

I weight my LO on adult scales - sit him up and weight him. I do this every month so I have his measurements (hight/weight) for every accomplished month.

He eats like a wolf though (ca 500g of solids a day at 7.5m) and he is BF with it too. Gets herbal tea in a no-spill cup with his solids.

Solids mashed up (blended) he will eat anything. Usually he gets:

  • breakfast (100g) - buckwheat/millet/yoghurt with banana.
  • lunch (200g) - veggies/beans/egg/some meat and if still hungry again same as for breakfast. He also gets raw veggies/pasta/finger food to make a mess.
  • dinner (100-200g) - same as lunch plus some fruit/veggies as finger food.

I think as long as the baby is not starved, and not overfed on formula she will be absolutely OK. They all eat differently at different ages.

Pinkywoo · 17/06/2020 11:06

I've been weighing DS with the luggage scales in the harness from his door bouncer!
