5 year old reading and writing

My 5 year old is in reception (October born so one of the oldest). He was doing well with reading and writing at school but since lockdown is very resistant to doing anything at home at all. School have not sent much home. His dad is doing the childcare while I work and with a younger child too doesn't do a great deal of home ed. When I try to get him to do any at the weekends it is always a battle. I am wary of pushing it too hard and putting him off. Any advice welcome. He's my oldest so I don't have any prior experience to draw on. Thanks!

Have you tried the reading eggs game? My daughter loves it. You can pick from a whole library of books for all ages and abilities. They read the book or you can press a button for the book to be read for you. At the end it asks you some questions about the story. The more answers you get right the more eggs you get and these eggs allow you to play games. We have found it a good way of encouraging her to read and she loves the games at the end and it feels like she is getting to play on her iPad.

Thanks for the suggestion! He'd enjoy something like that.

Hi my eldest is the same age and was a bit like that too. Things that have really worked motivating him (some of these only need minimum supervision) are:

-Teach your Monster to Read online game
www.teachyourmonstertoread.com
-Forest Phonics online game
www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/forestPhonics/index.html
-The Maths Factor website
www.themathsfactor.com
-Collins Easy Learning 5-7 books from Amazon (I laminated the pages so they could be used again and again)
www.amazon.co.uk/s?ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_6&sprefix=collin&k=collins+easy+learning+5-7&tag=mumsnetforu03-21
-Oxford Owl Free Ebooks website
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/
-New Phonics Play website with games
www.phonicsplay.co.uk
-TopMarks website for Maths games www.topmarks.co.uk

  • Costco have got well priced children's story books at the moment too.

Also the Alphablocks animations on YouTube are quite entertaining too.

If you're on Instagram have a look at 'fiveminutemum' she does lots of fun, quick games that might suit your son.

My daughter liked Reading Eggs and the Monster Letters app. At this age it's most important that they enjoy it and don't see it as a chore - don't stress too much about him doing 'work'.

Thanks so much for all the ideas! I think I am in danger of making it a chore so will try some of those activities instead.
