I've never read for my son. Now he's almost 8 years old and he's reading development is not , where it should be. He had one-to-one reading session with teacher and there was an improvement. Should I start to read to him now? Is it not too late? How can I help him?

Absolutely start reading to and with him.

Did the teacher explain what they were doing during the 1-1 sessions? If so try some of those activities and ideas with him.

Also it's a good idea to try different types of material for him to read, comics, joke books, fact books. Sometimes books can be overwhelming, where as other options can help encourage a child to engage.

Also end each day with a bedtime story. If you want to take this one step further take turns to read a page or section of a book. You read one part, he reads the next.

Definitely not too late, get him to listen to audio books and read exciting chapter books to him every day. Doing this and leaving the book at an exciting point is what pushed my dc from good readers to readers who read for pleasure. There's a lot of great books out there.

Thanks for quick replies!
He actually likes fact books. I can see him reading his kids encyclopedia and enjoys facts. Just not keen on stories.
