DS is 5 months, or 22 weeks. He seems to be developing okay, he smiles a lot, laughs when we tickle him, wants to be constantly around us, actually cries and has a tantrum if he's left alone in the room so in that sense he's very social. If you make eye contact with him, you get a lovely smile every time. No consonants or babbling yet but lots of squeels, raspberries, and general noise.

Physically though I'm not sure, he can't sit on his own yet, but can sit if he's being held up or sitting in his bumbo seat, although his head wobbles a bit but is getting better day by day. He only spends about 10 mins on his play gym before he wants to be picked up, but can bat at the toys and can hold and grab stuff and is on the verge of rolling from back to front.

He doesn't push down on his feet though when I try to make him stand and he can't grab his feet and toes yet either.

The reason I'm more anxious is that my first DS spoke very late and is still at the age of 5 behind with his language so I just want to know if he's doing okay.

Thanks

Sounds very similar to my 5 MO. Only difference is that mine can occupy himself for quite a long time with toys or in his gym. We’ve left him from quite a young age to entertain himself a bit

Don’t worry 😊

Just talk, sing and read to him as much as you can.

Get his elder brother to read books to him. (Do it daily at the moment ) If the elder one can't read properly show him he can make up stories and turn the pages of a book Infront of his baby brother, which is baby brother will love. Point out his baby brother doesn't know the story in his head and also can't read so will enjoy the story he tell him.

Following this as my DS is also soon to be 5 and is delayed, and so I am very alert when it comes to milestones etc with my 5mo DD.

Our boy is 5 months next week. Here's a summary:

  • Smiles and laughs a lot at us and other people
  • Tries to sit up all the time
  • Is curious about everything and cranes his head all the time
  • Gets distracted while breastfeeding so often doesn't get enough in
  • Wakes 3 times a night, every night
  • Puts everything he can find into his mouth
  • No interest in rolling over
YRGAM · 05/06/2020 22:02

And isn't 5 months a bit young to be sitting up?

pinkstar01 · 05/06/2020 22:44

@YRGAM your boy sounds just like mine! We have to give him his bottle in the quiet room upstairs otherwise he gets distracted so easily. His favourite thing to do is look around and try and make eye contact with whoever is there. He has more interest in people than toys at the moment. And yes isn't really fussed about rolling but the only thing that makes him turn is looking for us!

@YRGAM yes it is, I'm definitely not too concerned about his sitting but he's not doing anything with his feet which I've noticed babies his age do by now

@BeforeIPutOnMyMakeup I try and talk to him a lot because of my older sons language delay, it's always in the back of my mind so I talk and engage with him as much as I can, but good idea about getting DS1 to read to him. His reading is coming along ok but I'll just tell him to chat to him about anything. He's fascinated with his big brother and watches everything he does :)

@pinkstar01 you will be back in 3 years complaining your youngest son never shuts up. Smile

Your baby sounds like a normal 5 months old to me, no worries or concerns at all. My little on was only really weight bearing at around 8-9 months and started walking at 12/13 months. He didn't sit before he was almost 8 months but was happy on his tummy and started crawling and putting himself in the sitting position rather than us just doing it. Put him on his tummy to get him to crawl later on rather than sitting. Crawling is supposed to be quite important as apparently it connects both sides of the brain, I never really crawled and walked at 9 months apparently lol not sure if the two halves of my brain are connected though 🙈😂😅

TheWhalrus · 05/06/2020 23:15

Yes...much of this sounds pretty familiar. Our DD will be 5 months old on the 20th. Not sure about the trying to sit up part, but the rest is all there. She even managed to put her feet (one at a time) in her mouth the other day.

TwoKidsStillStanding · 05/06/2020 23:20

Mine is 4.5 months. He can do some of the things you describe - blowing raspberries, grabbing his feet and putting them in his mouth, and can sit for maybe 30 seconds unsupported. He also holds his head up well and likes to “stand” when held. No rolling yet, though. He is big for his age, and definitely more advanced physically than his older brother was at the same age.

He is very clingy, 10 minutes on the gym/in the bouncy chair is good in this house! He has just started giggling and responds to tickles. No babbling but he does make noises.

The physical milestones have happened quite quickly here - eg he’s been supported to sit for a few weeks but suddenly managed it unsupported today- it’s as though something suddenly clicked.

@pinkstar01 hello. I wonder how did it go on with your baby,s language development?
