Holding the baby

My baby is 8 weeks old and apart from my mum, no one has held him. Can I ask what any other mums with new babies have done? We told my MIL she could hold him but she didn't feel comfortable to do so (for his sake.) No judgement please, just would like to know what other people have done or how you feel about this

Following as I'm due any day, and I'm worried as we are getting questions about whether people can meet the baby and hold them!! Not sure what we will decide to do. Congrats on your new arrival Smile

I don't feel comfortable with anyone holding him at the moment unless it's me or OH.

Our baby is 13 weeks old so he got to briefly meet some family before lockdown happened so he's only really been held once by others. We have seen FIL who kept his distance and we have seen a couple of people at the window but I wouldn't feel happy giving him to anyone for a hold as they don't live here and work in jobs such as a supermarket or the NHS.
From my experience, babies, especially first grand babies, can send people into a bit of a frenzy so it's also being careful that they don't let their excitement override the situation. It is sad and difficult but there will be time eventually and babies don't really have any idea who anyone is so they're not missing out yet.

For now im not comfortable with anyone holding my baby girl she is just 4 months old and i know children are least affected by this infection but still i don't let anyone hold her except my husband and daughter and even they are not allowed to touch her before taking a shower when they return home somewhere.

I am a first time mum with a 9 week old and nobody apart from my myself and husband have held her. It's really hard as my mum can't wait to hold her, but I feel like it's not worth the risk.

No one is allowed near my 9 month old at the moment. Unfortunately she caught covid from her father and turned blue a week ago and couldn't breathe. After an ambulance was called and oxygen needed in hospital, I really don't know why the media keep saying babies and kids aren't affected. Maybe not as much or as badly, but I watched my baby turn blue and thought I might lose her. Not worth the risk I'd say

At the moment only me or DH hold DS (6 months) because nobody else lives with us. My mum would love to give him a cuddle but if I'm not confident to have a hug from her then I can't hand him to her. Pre Covid I handed him to anyone who wanted a go but he was a pretty robust 10lbs 10oz at birth.

No one has held my seven week old except his father and I. Can't wait till family can have a cuddle.

I’m due in July and we don’t think anyone is getting to touch the baby when it’s here. Other than us, his siblings and HCPs obviously. Grandparents will just have to suck it up.

They all live more than 2 hours drive from us, so I’m not driving with the baby to them for socially distant viewing. DH might try to suggest it because MIL doesn’t drive, but I won’t be up for that with a newborn (and he’s staying with me). In any case, there’s no way that MIL would stay 2m away from any of her grandkids. So the grandparents can observe the new baby on a what’s app video call. 😆

Bubblesbubblesmybubbles · 03/06/2020 19:23

Grandparents were told if they want a cuddle to strictly self isolate for 2 weeks. No supermarket shops or anything only walks in areas they wouldnt see anyone.

Those who obliged have had a cuddle. Those who said we were overreacting have not Hmm

My DS is ten weeks old, born at the very start of lockdown. No one apart from me, DH and DS1 have held him. I’m too anxious!

Lazypuppy · 03/06/2020 20:17

In normal times i had no issue, people came to visit the day after baby was born, i quite happily hand her to whoever is visiting.

Now during COVID, i'd be much more selective based on who i could i trust had been careful

My parents hold my son but only because they're totally isolating.
