What do you say to a stranger.....

...who tells you your baby looks very serious ?

So, you've nipped to the shops and the cashier looks into the pram at your baby and says "ooh what a serous face" ..or a passer by looks in and says "she looks tired" or "ooh no smile today? Someone is very serious "

I am not massively bothered as I don't care what people think , it's just that I've been chatting to my husband about it as this is a reoccurring thing to be said to us about our baby and we are just curious to what people would think on Mumsnet!. We tend to just fake laugh it off and say "oh yes haha , mummy's dragging her out hahah " and walk off and forget about it . But as this happens all the time it's a bit , well, annoying !!! My daughter won't just smile for anyone and she does have a pigment under her eyes that makes her look tired sometimes when she isn't . And she will be perfectly content sat in her pram people watching/watching the world go by .

Out of interest, would you react in the same way as us just to not make a big deal out of a silly comment, or would you say something ? It's not that I expect compliments showered on us by strangers but it's a bit upsetting when we are showered by negative comments on our baby's facial expressions !!! Haha 😆

I’ve had this loads. I usually reply “yes, it takes her a while to decide whether or not she likes someone” Grin

"Probably filling her nappy again."

"Funny, I was just thinking the same about you."

Weak smile, slight head tilt. Then ignore. People just say things to fill the silence.

When my son was a newborn he had huge feet! It was a hot summer so usually just in a vest and bare feet so much more noticeable. I found it really offensive to be honest. Id either Laugh it off, or if I’d had enough I’d say he takes after his father and wink. That usually shut them up 🤣

"oh he/she is very fussy about who they like" with a head tilt works for me.
