Why didn't I check on him earlier?!

I've just had an awful experience and despite coming to bed shattered, I now don't feel like I can sleep.

DS is 3yo and goes to bed at 7pm, he usually takes an hour or so to settle and fall asleep. Once he's asleep we check on him and take toys off his bed, etc. Tonight DP is at work and I've been chatting to my sister so I didn't do my usual check. I've come up to bed to find him inside his duvet cover, under the duvet and kind of twisted in it. He was so hot i could feel the heat coming from him before I even touched him. He was sweating so much his pj's are soaking and his lips were blue. I literally had to climb onto his bed and tear him out of the covers as he was so wrapped up. He's fine now but I could kick myself for not checking on him earlier. I'm trying not to think of the "what ifs".

God, both of my children almost died during their births, my daughter had multiple episodes where we weren't sure if she was going to make it and I only said to my sister tonight that today is the first time I actually feel like it's all in the past and I can finally relax and move on. Would it be selfish to take him out of his bed to sleep with me? It's not a long term solution and he'd wonder what the heck was happening but I'd feel better for it.

I think you should call 111 at the least - I agree with the pp, blue lips don't sound right, he might need checking over. What an awful fright you had x

Pebblexox · 01/06/2020 07:32

I'm sorry you had such a fright, it's awful when they get themselves into those situations. As much as it's difficult, please try and not think of the what ifs. All you have to remember is you DID check on him, and he is okay!
As pp has said the blue lips wouldn't really make sense with the situation, unless he was struggling to breath. As blue lips are a sign of either low oxygen levels, or bad circulation. If you notice his lips change colour again, I'd take him to be checked over just to rule out any problems.

@SiaPR ridiculous to diagnose a heart defect unless you are a doctor who has directly examined this child, which you are not

Where did I diagnose? I just pointed out that overheating does not cause blue lips. Can’t you read?

Newchapter2020 · 01/06/2020 07:45

Overheating CAN cause blue lips. We had this when one of the children had a fever, she had a blue tinge. The hospital said that it can and does happen.

Yester · 01/06/2020 07:46

Poor you. I agree about checking with the GP /111 regarding the blue lips. It may be nothing but not something to ignore.

Littlefrog99 · 01/06/2020 07:47

@NameChangedToProtect1 the poppers are at the foot end and tucked under the mattress. He's a very savvy 3yo. Last year
he'd been asleep, or so I thought, for about 20mins when I heard through his monitor he was mumbling something about being stuck so I went to see what he was up to. At the age of 2.5y he'd managed to silently move a chair across his room, put the washing basket on top of it and climb up to ceiling height to peel off a parrot sticker. I was sat next to the monitor the whole time and didn't hear a thing.

HereComesSimon · 01/06/2020 07:50

My dd had blue lips with a fever last year.

I would probably get it checked though.

Thank you for sharing this with us op. I've just checked ds duvet cover and two of the poppers were undone. I will be making sure they're all closed from now on.

May09Bump · 01/06/2020 08:06

Don't use Gro to Bedding - it caused my daughter to get stuck underneath and she could get out because it was closed. Get all in one quilts - little white company do them and zara home - they don't twist. It is very scary to happen - my daughter was so hot too and screaming. Get the blue lips checked out x I wouldn't move to your bed - just alter bedding, but understand why you would consider it.

Spotsandstars · 01/06/2020 08:16

You checked on him at the right time though didn't you....any earlier and he might not have even been in that position and you wouldn't have checked again. So, everything happened at the right time, you did the right thing. Tonight I would take the cover off the duvet tho. Loves x

minisoksmakehardwork · 01/06/2020 08:20

Blue lips are a common cause of lack of oxygen, which given OP's son was inside a duvet cover and wrapped up in the duvet as well is entirely possible AND to be hot and sweating as a result of the same. I don't think OP needs scaring further that there is something else going on separate to this incident.

That said, @Littlefrog99, if you are at all worried, please give your GP and ring and ask for further advice.

minisoksmakehardwork · 01/06/2020 08:22

@SiaPR - overheating might not cause blue lips but suffocation does...

Littlefrog99 · 01/06/2020 08:23

To answer some PPs, both DC have video monitors already. I'm pretty sure he was struggling for oxygen considering his head was wrapped up in his duvet - that would absolutely cause blue lips. He definitely doesn't have any underlying illnesses. DD has a heart problem so DS was also assessed for any issues. I didn't call for an ambulance as he was fine once I got him out. I have an oxygen and heart rate monitor for DD, I tested him and all levels were normal so no need for one.

He's absolutely fine this morning, sat eating his breakfast asking if he can go to the park. I asked if he wanted to sleep in my bed tonight, he said no. Big boys sleep in their own beds apparently.

Hope you’re feeling better OP ( I have no doubt your DS is fine !) even if somewhat tired .
Maybe just a sheet or light blanket n this weather would be better ?

Spied · 01/06/2020 08:34

So pleased everything is ok and it certainly seems DS is unscathed by the eventSmile.
Please don't spend today going through the 'what ifs'. Ruminating will get you nowhere. I say this as a serial ruminator Hmm
I spent last night awake unable to sleep as twice when I'd checked my 10yo he'd wrapped his sheet around his head!

Nousernameforme · 01/06/2020 08:36

Oh they do like to scare you. I still go in and poke my youngest who is 6 to make sure he is breathing. There is always the tiniest split second where I think he might not be when I look in.

Change his duvet for a sheet/ blanket today so he can't get tangled up and overheat tonight. Be kind to yourself today there is no point letting the what-ifs in

awesomeaircraft · 01/06/2020 08:57

What a shock. You were here for him in time. Well done on checking on him.

We used [[https://gro.co.uk/product/grobag-baby-sleep-bag/]] until around 4yo I think (kids could take them off themselves to go to the toilet, etc) as they were duvet kickers. They make them for toddlers, young kids etc.

awesomeaircraft · 01/06/2020 08:58

Oops, link fail.

Tolivebytheseaahh · 01/06/2020 10:02

@Littlefrog99

Take no notice. He got abit sweaty that's all. My son's lips go blue when he's cooler usually. But it all depends on skin tone too. I personally get no colour in my cheeks ever. But my son does when he's cold. Never when he's hot.

Glad he's ok today. X

Littlefrog99 · 01/06/2020 14:25

I've just looked at the gro-bag for toddlers and I realised we already have one that would fit him. I've shown it to him and he's insisted he wears it now so that's a relief.

I'm trying my best not to ruminate on it. I've given my head a wobble and keep telling myself he's fine, I checked on him before anything bad happened and we can make changes to ensure it never happens again. I'm sure it won't be long before he does something else to scare the bejesus out of us, it's what he does Confused
