Best baby toys to keep baby entertained?

Rachaelf37 · 31/05/2020 15:11

Hi, I have a 3 month old baby. I'm looking for toy ideas to keep him entertained from now till he's older. We have a play gym, vibrating chair, books and the baby sensory foil. Has anyone got any other other toy ideas? Smile

This thread is a little old now, but if you’ve landed here looking for the top baby toys, we’ve recently updated our best baby toys page with lots of great options for your baby's first year, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

Following! I have no advice, but im soon to be in your position! I also have exactly the same toys as you.

We got bought some Lamaze toys. One is a caterpillar and one is a fairy. We also have a Tigger finger puppet/blanket toy and we also got bought a giraffe which rattles. She loves the colours, patterns and textures. She's now 6 months old and she still loves to play with them.

I have a nappy changing caddy and she loves nothing more than to root around and empty it, so I bought a cheap basket and filled it with little toys, blankets anything really and it entertains her for hours!

Also the Lamaze caterpillar is great!

I have just been given an immense long dragon toy, and when I lie her on her playmat with it looped round her, it seems to make her calmer. I can then introduce toys "inside" the dragon circle and have others nearby without overstimulating.

Thanks for the suggestions so far :) I forgot to say we have the lamaze peacock and caterpillar.

dochas06 · 31/05/2020 15:59

My 4month old loves her Lamaze ‘lots of knots’ I think it’s called. Also a crinkley butterfly thing, I think it came with the Lamaze playmat.

DS loved his jellycat 'dinotails' book at that age; there's loads of variations of dinosaurs aren't your thing.

He also liked mirrors and gazing at himself

Pickles89 · 31/05/2020 16:06

I've worked with little ones for 15 years and all the babies I've ever met have preferred real life stuff to special baby toys. Look into 'treasure baskets' is my advice.

NeverTrustASmilingCat · 31/05/2020 16:10

Stacking cups?

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 31/05/2020 16:17

Mine both liked being propped up in front of the washing machine. I also got literally years of use out of a plastic bottle filled with dried pasta. Blowing bubbles is always a hit, and soft balls to roll.

Helloagain20 · 31/05/2020 16:36

Look up treasure baskets you can buy ready made ones or make them up yourself. They're often used in educational settings. My Dt had one kept them entertained for hours.
Stacking cups (can also be used in the bath).
A doll.
Anything with wheels or buttons.
Also anything you can fill with pasta etc entertains well.
Dont spend loads of money as they grow up so fast. You need things that will develop with them.

ZooKeeper19 · 31/05/2020 18:30

I must second OrangeGinLemonFanta - the washing machine was a great source of fun. A £5 mylar foil (the one Ambulances use to keep people warm), cat toys in general, empty Lucozade bottle, earphones, garlic press and wooden kitchen spoon... Basically nothing whatsoever I bought for the baby he cares about.

BertieBotts · 31/05/2020 19:03

They like the Winkel or Skwish or anything made by that company at that age. But will go off it by 9/12 months.

OBall or the spin offs etc - e.g. the cars, rattles - those are great. Still get played with.

DS loved high contrast books which he still looks at at nearly 2.

There is not much they enjoy at 3 months which will go the distance. At this age it really is about grasping things and looking at things.

troppibambini · 31/05/2020 19:04

Oh god you need the eggs. All my babies were obsessed with them... one mo will find them.

troppibambini · 31/05/2020 19:06

These.

troppibambini · 31/05/2020 19:07

I would from 6 months-ish.

pinkmummy1 · 31/05/2020 19:09

Both mine had a jumperoo. There a life saver.

firstimemamma · 31/05/2020 19:12

In all honestly - household items! Save your money!

Have you tried your child with a cardboard box, clothes peg, swishy sponge, wooden spoon and saucepan drum set? Our living room is full of actual toys and all my son is interested in is cardboard boxes.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious to you, just thought it was worth mentioning. You could make a Washing line in your kitchen out of string and peg some little flannels or tea towels to it. My ds was fascinated by this when he was a baby!

PurBal · 31/05/2020 19:12

A mirror

PeacefulInTheDeep · 31/05/2020 21:04

The OBall has been a hit with both of mine - very light and easy to grab.

17caterpillars1mouse · 31/05/2020 21:28

Manhattan skwish toy
Baby musical instrument shakers / maracas

  • baby safe mirror
  • hand puppets
  • ball
17caterpillars1mouse · 31/05/2020 21:30

Oh and a rainmaker

zaffa · 31/05/2020 21:37

My friend turned up when DD was about four and a half months with a bag of Lamaze toys (butterfly, dragonfly I think, caterpillar) as well as some rattles and such that her two had outgrown. They're really brightly coloured and DD loves them! She isn't as in love with the caterpillar as she is with the butterfly and dragon fly. Also taggies - they're soft toys with tags and sensory bits on them.

Oh and teethers. Definitely get them used to teethers now as DD took a while to get to grips with it and they really do help!

Lastly her favourite toy is my face, which she loves to poke and pinch for ages in the morning whilst I try to pretend I'm still asleep 😴 Grin

LivingThatLockdownLife · 03/06/2020 11:43

Thanks for the dino book idea @larrythelizard
