Would you allow 6 month old to go in sandpit

Hi,

My partner all of a sudden came home today with a sandpit. Our daughter is 6 months old. Would you allow your 6 month old to go in one. Obviously sand will end up in her mouth at some point but I assume she will quickly learn it’s not edible. I could imagine the same happening to a 1 year old for example but don’t know if I should just hold off or let her go for it ?

I'd hold off, just because the hassle of sand everywhere including in her mouth, nose, eyes, nappy etc. is just not worth it. She's too young to get anything from it really. There are much easier ways to stimulate her for now. When she's bigger she'll be able to enjoy it a lot more.

I think you can buy edible sand, that’s probably the safest option for now.

My son just ate it. He didn't really get much from it to be honest.
You could use it as a sensory tray for now maybe? Use edible stuff like pasta, jelly etc.

You could use it for gloop for now? Fun messy sensory play that doesn’t stain anything and won’t harm her in any way..

I am actually looking for a sandpit for my almost 6 mo. I want to fill it with some kind of edible ‘sand’ or mush.

Don't do it. Sand goes fucking everywhere.

Colouringinbook · 30/05/2020 07:43

No. My entire house and garden is covered in sand. It's a nightmare.

JoanieCash · 30/05/2020 07:53

Sand pits need to be at furthest point in your garden too, to maximise sand coming off before stepping into house. They’re a nightmare!

Useful to know for sand, any dampness and sand will stick to you like mad. If you use talc / baby powder (not real talc) then the sand just brushes off. Handy at the beach.

Yes I would pop a baby in for a bit, she might really enjoy it.
My dts used to eat a bit of sand here and there, it didn’t hurt them.

If your worried about it you could always take her out if she is eating too much.

Pp are right though, it does go everywhere, it’s a massive pita.
