Bastard ringworm! Any advice?

My daughter got ringworm about a week after lockdown. After a misdiagnosis from a pharmacist, we got some anti fungal prescribed from the doctor and started treating. By this point I had it too. After 2 weeks it was still spreading. The doctor told me to continue treatment for another 4 weeks. By this point it is still spreading! He has now prescribed her turbinafine 1% which says it’s not suitable for use on children??

We change her bedding daily, her clothes daily, my clothes, I blow dry her hair and body as I read moisture can be a problem. I wear a shirt when I breastfeed to cover areas of ringworm on my body.

I don’t know what else to do Sad it’s never ending! Is this normal? I’ve never had it before.

Do you get eczema as there is one (discoid eczema) that looks similar to ringworm?

Puds11 · 29/05/2020 19:18

No, I’ve never had eczema and it would be a bit strange for us both to get it at the same time.

Where is it on your body?

I have a patch on both arms and my side. Each patch is no bigger than 20p. DD has it on her head arm and bum.

You can buy anti fungal cream from the pharmacy. Its really a good idea to nip it in the bud quickly.

I had it and didnt get the cream quickly, and it too 3 months of using the cream for it to go.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 29/05/2020 19:58

In fact, ive just read that you have it in more than one place.

I THINK (not certain) that the GP can perscribe some oral anti fungal medication in that case.

Same principle applies though, get it sorted quickly otherwise it grows and grows.

We used terbinafine on dd's ringworm after numerous other creams. It did work. The nurse explained it's not licensed in children, mainly as it hadn't been tested, but didnt include anything that would do any harm.

Thanks @Letsallscreamatthesistene. They can’t prescribe the tablets for my DD and are not sure I can take them whilst breastfeeding. I’m somewhat reassured knowing it took 3 months for yours to heal.

The cream was clotrimazole. I was using when I was pregnant. I think its ok for breastfeeding.

Puds11 · 29/05/2020 20:34

Thanks @Letsallscreamatthesistene I’ll ask the pharmacist.

Used Clotrimazole. Took my son to pharmacist and he gave it straight away. It did work, but I started treatment on day 1, as I knew what it was- couple of his classmates had it beforehand. Ringworm usually looks like a red patch with different colour red (a bit crusty sometimes) ring around it.

Puds11 · 29/05/2020 20:42

@ChangeMeAlready do you know if it’s ok for a baby?

Have you got pets? I think that ringworm can be passed backwards & forewords between pets & humans. Might be worth asking your vet if any pets require treatment also?

Puds11 · 29/05/2020 21:23

I believe it was contracted from a dog outside of our home. We only have a hamster who she doesn’t really interact with and I’ve checked him and he’s ok.

OP, my son was 5 at the time. Better consult pharmacist.
