DD is ten weeks old and for the last seven weeks has been suffering from reflux (reflux has only been confirmed when I took her for her 8- week injections. Before that she was diagnosed with a cold by a different GP).

GP recommended changing her formula. I was breastfeeding but had to stop as had to start medication which was harmful to her, so was best to stop. She also prescribed Infacol as I said she was straining as well.

Infacol hasn't helped, so have stopped using it and last week we began weaning her off Aldi's Mamia's brand to her new SMA anti-reflux.

She started the SMA properly on Monday but it seems to have made her worse in a way. She isn't spitting up as much or gagging on her bottle but she is in and out of sleep throughout the day and cries for ten minutes between every feed. She tends to go red in the face and grunts as if she is trying to pass a bowel movement. She is having plenty of dirty nappies, so don't think she is constipated but I can't think why she would be straining otherwise.

I have discussed this with HV and she says to stick with the formula as it is likely her digestive system hasn't had time to get used to it yet and to get in touch with GP again and to explain what we've done and request Gaviscon. I am hesitant to as I have heard it can cause constipation and if she is having problems already I don't want it to contribute.

Has anyone else been through this? Does this seem the right way to go?

Gaviscon can cause constipation, but you can medicate that as well. I know its not nice for a baby to be on medications, but if it makes eating less painful then its the way to go I think. Ive never had to use it, but people say ranitidine helps loads.

How long did you try infacol for? You have to use it for a while before seeing any benefits.

We had exactly the same problem!

The straining and grunts went on for 4 months. We changed to aptamil comfort which helped alot. I was also told the digestive system not working propeely.

Infacol didn't work. Gripe water didn't work. And gaviscon never worked. Aptamil comfort was our only saver.

We tried gripe water, burping her a few times during each feed, anti-colic bottles, nothing worked until we got a gaviscon prescription, which worked wonders.

Her bowel movements were much harder and she strained more, but on balance DD seemed to be much more comfy than she was when her reflux wasn’t controlled.

We also had a short stint on ranitidine but I think that’s specifically for excess stomach acid which wasn’t DD’s problem. I know other babies who’ve had great results from it though.

Personally I’d keep with the SMA, if it works then great. Adding gaviscon into the mix would probably just make the constipation worse and not be of much benefit. If the SMA doesn’t work I’d recommend giving gaviscon a go. Good luck!

GP advised using Infacol for a week which is what we did.

Gripe water worked really well at first but in the last two weeks it doesn't seem to be helping any now.
