Is my 14 months old diet ok?

Lately I am really stressing over whether my baby is eating a well diet. He doesnt eat much firstly

Today so far

Breakfast - scrambled eggs with buttered toast (he ate half the egg and a quarter of the toast) is the amount he ate ok?

Snack - He had half a kiwi fruit and about a quarter of a banana

Lunch - pasta bolognese with peas and sweetcorn (Id say he ate about 2 tablespoons max)

Snack - he are a small slice of sugarfree banana cake and half a kiwi fruit

Dinner - he will have chicken, brussel sprouts, potato and peas.

His food will usuaully be the same, I try to give him carbs, fruit and veg and protein in each meal. I also try to incorporate fats in (coconut oil, olive oil, avocados etc)

He also has around 20 ounces of cows milk a day.

He is 10.5kgs and 14 months old

All I would say is that apart from his milk he doesn’t seem to have very much dairy in his diet (a little in the scrambled egg and buttered toast?)

All children are different. As long as the dirt is balanced and they’re gaining weight as expected then there’s no need to worry.

If you’re worried though about the small amounts, maybe try reducing his milk intake. It may be filling him up.

Oooops I forgot to mention that - I actually always give him yogurt (he had some with his pasta lunch today). He usually has a tub of homemade yogurt (mum kindly always makes them) a day.

It looks good and varied but not much solid food so I'd start cutting back on the milk.

Mella91 · 27/05/2020 14:43

@MummaGiles I have tried reducing his milk this past week by a little however he got so fussy everyday and started whining for his milk

@MummaGiles & @HollyBollyBooBoo any tips on cutting back milk when baby is crying for his milk?

Looks ok to me. Great he’s having Brussel sprouts! Well done. Mine had snacks occasionally at that age. You could reduce that if you want him to eat more lunch. Or reduce milk and substitute water. He’s having eggs, milk, chicken and whatever is in the Bolognese in one day so that’s quite a variety of protein. I assume he has fish and cheese too. If he’s active, or becomes more active, he will probably eat more.

(As my DD2 didn’t eat anything much until she was 20 months and caused untold worry - that list of food would have been wonderful for me to list at 14 months. DD would eat one or two pieces of pasta, 1/4 of a small yoghurt and little else other than milk. No one could make her eat. She was even a case study at a Health Visitor conference! )

BubblesBuddy · 27/05/2020 14:54

If he wants milk, would he accept water? Or less milk. Or yoghurt? Or a cuddle? Or just let him have the milk. It’s not as if he’s not eating like mine did. He is. He doesn’t seem fussy either. I don’t think you need to worry.

What are you giving him his milk in? Day time milk should be in a cup. Are you giving him vitamins?

Mella91 · 27/05/2020 15:24

@BubblesBuddy he has fish once a week and we try to add cheese wherever we can. His omelette had grated cheese and milk and his pasta bolognese had cheese in sauce. I'm glad you think so thank you. I am going to sound terrible but I never thought to try water instead. He got loads of cuddles but just wasnt satisfied with them.

@Selfsettling3 I feel terrible but we still use the bottle and only after reading what you said I researched and found out I should have cut the bottle at 12 months. Feel terrible. He has his water in his sippy cup (doidy cup) at breakfast, lunch and dinner however always had his milk in a bottle which I am going to now stop.

Would you advice I cut the bottle for milk cold turkey or slowly wean him off?

And no, I dont give him vitamins as he eats loads of different food types. My issue is more he eats little bits. He eats all his veg, fruits meats carbs etc but little chicken bites

Can you just reduce volume by say 20% of whatever you're giving in the bottle? Gradually reduce it.

Also think about when you're giving the milk, i.e not too close to meal times.

Mella91 · 28/05/2020 15:35

I am doing that today. He was ok with his morning and before first nap bottle. But hated it at 3rd bottle and cried for more..

I'm going to keep trying. Also tried the cup but he just refuses milk from a cup. But think thats for another thread :)

He needs vitamins. All under 5s should have a multivitamin and everyone in the U.K. should have vitamin D.

BubblesBuddy · 28/05/2020 19:49

In some respects I’m not sure why you are worried. He’s been happy and he’s eating! He has a great balanced diet. My DD virtually refused to eat. Breast fed and refused the bottle too. In fact never had a bottle! She did eventually have a cup. It doesn’t matter though. He’s eating. He’s healthy and if he goes outside he doesn’t need extra vitamins.

You don’t have to introduce a cup at 1 year. I couldn’t introduce a bottle ever! Yes. It screwed me up and it was awful. I didn’t want to breastfeed beyond 6 months. Your baby is doing really well so if he eats little and often, does it matter? It’s about 100 % more than mine ate at the same age! So believe in yourself and have a happy baby. It’s not worth changing anything by the sound of it. Enjoy him as he is.
