Potty Training: To continue or not?

DS is 2.4 and we decided to give potty training a go this long weekend.

He has shown a few of the readiness signs but the one thing he didn't display we knowing when he needs to go.

I was hoping once we started with the potty training he would it up, however we are three days in and he is still not showing any sign of understanding of this.

I've basically been placing him on the potty once an hour, sometimes he goes and sometimes he doesn't.

We've had some successful moments where I've asked him if he needed to go and he said yes. But if I don't prompt him or put him on the potty, he has an accident.

Should I put this aside for a few months until he recognises 'the urge' or shall I just persist and hope it clicks soon?

Does he know when he needs a poo? When he had a nappy on, would he tell you or go away somewhere (behind a curtain/under a table) to poo?

littlelionroars · 25/05/2020 18:45

@NuffSaidSam No he doesn't normally hide to poo with his nappy on. But he does ask to be changed as soon as he's done one.

He's actually been quite happy to poop on his potty which I was surprised about.

If he's quite happy going on the potty and is pooing on the potty too, I would carry on.

I wouldn't normally expect them to ask for the potty for the first week or so. IME it normally goes:

  • you take them/make them go regularly for a few days (accidents at a minimum).
  • you start asking and reminding but not
forcing them if they say no (some accidents here while they learn their limits).
  • they start to tell you/ask for the potty after about a week/ten days, but will still need reminding if they're very caught up in something.

@NuffSaidSam Thanks, that is reassuring. This is my first time potty training, so good to know that we are on the right track!

I agree with pp. We just potty trained DS and it went almost exactly like that. He now asks for potty or toilet.

I had to prompt DD to use the potty for months, and then all of a sudden she just started asking. DD didn’t show any readiness signs either, but soon learnt that she only goes to the toilet on the potty.

I would definitely carry on, sounds like you are making good progress! I think it’s a good time to do it too as you can’t really go anywhere anyway.

I highly recommend the oh crap method.

Thanks everyone. We are soldiering on and the good news is that he actually came to me in the kitchen and asked to go to the potty once this morning, so I think it's starting to sink in.

We've only had a single accident so far today, so I think that is good progress for Day 4!

I will look into the "Oh Crap" method though.

It clicked for my girl on day 5... you're nearly there!
