Long distance travel with a baby

Sorry for the silly question but I have family that are a 5/6 hour journey from me, at what age is it okay for my baby to do a journey like that ? As newborns shouldn't be in a car seat longer than 2 hours, I guess when they are able to hold their own heads up that is okay?

It's fine to go in the car as long as you stop regularly to take baby out of the car seat. You'll need to stop to feed and change baby anyway. With a 5/6 hour journey I would probably factor in 2-3 stops.

Alternatively, if it's possible to do the journey by train, that can work very well - obviously you can hold, feed and change baby throughout the journey. The issue is that you'll need to travel light which is doable if you are visiting family and they can buy or borrow a travel cot, get some nappies, etc.

I thought they were only supposed to go 30mins in a car seat? Or is that just newborns?

Newborns shouldn’t be in a car seat longer than 30 mins

These guidelines say that the 30 minute limit is for the first 4 weeks, and after that 2 hours is ok
