5 month old not bothered about milk - time to start weaning?

Hi

DC 2 recently doesn’t seem that bothered about milk - she’s not unwell. She pisses about drinking it and tends to stop after about 5 / 7 oz. With my first I waited until bang on 6 months but I’m tempted to see if she would like some porridge etc.

What do you think?

How much are they taking in total?

You can always offer and see if she's more interested in porridge. The guidelines about weaning are just that, guidelines. Every baby is different.

At 5 months, I think 5-7 oz per feed sounds perfectly normal. Some babies prefer little and often. If you look at the size of the bottle and imagine the size of their stomach, it's actually quite a lot. I would carry on as planned. A few weeks here or there won't matter, but milk is still more nutrient and calorie dense than first foods.

Sounds completely normal, by six month old was only taking those amounts at five months (and is still on 5 x 6oz bottles a day plus a few tasters of whatever we're eating).

Definitely don't replace milk with food - at the start of weaning she should be on the same amount of milk as pre-weaning.

If she's showing signs of readiness to wean (sitting unaided, grabbing at your food) then crack on, if not wait a bit longer.

Ds is 6m next week, always been a sodding nightmare to feed, will drink 2 oz then i have to fight to get another 3-5oz in her, usually spanning over an hour and a half. Ive been weaning last month or so as she was constantly in our food trying to eat it so followed her lead. Shes been fine, amount of food is starting to increase now

Check if her tongue reflex is gone and other signs shes ready. I would hold off till 6 months and the gut is more developed.
Personally I wouldn't start with baby porridge either, much more nutritious food out there.

Grabbing at food is not a sign of readiness, why do people still believe this?! Grabbing at your car keys doesn’t mean they’re ready to drive, either.
