Milk protein allergy 7 week old

At 6 weeks old I noticed my DS having blood in his nappy. It got worse until I took him to the hospital. They said he had a cows milk protein allergy. As I'm breast feeding him I need to cut out all dairy(I miss cheese and ice cream so badly!) . I've done this for nearly 2 weeks but he still has blood in his nappy. He also cries lots when I try to feed him. Anyone else had this happen? How long did it take for the bleeding to stop?

It can take up to 6 weeks for dairy to leave your system but you should notice a difference after 3-5 days.

Are you absolutely sure you’ve cut out all dairy? No milk, no whey products, checking every ingredient?

Yes I'm being very careful and checking all labels. It's rediciulus how much stuff has milk powder in it! It's been 2 weeks on Sunday where I've eaten no milk derived ingredients but he's still got blood in his nappy on and off and cries when he feeds. I really don't want to give up on breastfeeding but not sure I have a choice.

It could be a different allergy - it's very common to be allergic to soy protein as well as milk protein as they're very similar substances. And of course soy products are a very common alternative to milk products!

At 2 weeks you should be able to see a difference. I would take him back to the doctor, probably with a plan in mind to cut more potential allergens from your diet.

Thanks for the advice. I cut out soya and that helped almost over night! Think he might also have sensitivity to oats as when I switched to oatmilk he had some blood again so I'm back on coconut milk. Can reflux and CMPA cause colic symptoms as 3 weeks after cutting out milk his colic seems so much worse

When I had this issue there was an excellent Facebook support group CMPA breastfeeding support I think.

Key to know is that chocolate bourbons are dairy free, the coconut collective chocolate pots are amazing etc!

My DD grew out of it and I was able to reintroduce dairy from about 5 months. Well done you for persevering with breast feeding!

Thank you so much for your reply. So good to know I'm not alone. How did you reintroduce cows milk? Was it part of weaning? Its hard as I'm a vegetarian so it feels like there's not much left I can eat! He's started to cry uncontrollably at night do you think there could be another allergy? I'll check out that Facebook page thanks!

Have you been referred to a consultant or dietitian? That is who advised us through it.

The Facebook group will definitely help with advice for good food for veggies avoiding CMP!

Don't know if you're cutting egg out already but that's another allergy common in little ones with CMPA.

My little one who had CMPA was also allergic to egg and she suffers with very bad hay fever.

However my other DD who doesn't have allergies had the worst colic ever so it could be separate issues!
