Depends where you are from, I suppose. Obviously, in the UK cannabis is illegal (unless prescribed by one of the very few doctors who are willing to do so), so much worse than having a glass of wine!

Fourandtwentyblackbirdsinmypie · 19/05/2020 07:33

Cannot handle alcohol.
Prepared to get flamed here haha.

If I have a spliff at night I'm chilled out and happy, if I had a glass of wine i would not be capable of looking after my children, alcohol does not agree with me and never has. I havent touched a drop in years, but do smoke instead.

If you can balance it with life and obviously not in front of the kids ( same with drinking though) I don't see much of a difference 🤷‍♀️

Abouttimemum · 19/05/2020 10:53

I’d say neither but that’s just me!
Drinking and drugs has no appeal.

mindutopia · 19/05/2020 14:06

I would never expose my kids to secondhand smoke and it's not really possible to smoke anything while staying sufficiently close to your children at night to make sure they are fine. So cigarettes or cannabis are both the same as far as I'm concerned and I wouldn't touch them.

I have no problems drinking around my dc though. I'm always perfectly capable of taking care of them - but I'm also not exposing them to anything that will be negative for their health.

Elsiebear90 · 19/05/2020 14:12

My neighbour has a child and smokes the odd spliff in the evening in his shed, I don’t think anything of it at all. It’s no different than having a drink after the kids have gone to sleep imo. I do think that you shouldn’t be drunk or high and in charge of children though, as it impairs your judgement and is dangerous, but one glass of wine or a small spliff (I would imagine) shouldn’t render most people unable to safely look after children.

CovidicusRex · 19/05/2020 14:20

Well weed is known to trigger psychosis so not great from that perspective. Hot air is also bad for your mouth/lungs. There isn’t really much to suggest it has health benefits for a healthy person. There’s also a risk that it’s been cut with god only knows what if you are buying illegally. Red wine in contrast is a good source of antioxidants. But wine is also full of sugar, some wines contain sulphides, and of course the alcohol is bad for you. So from a health perspective both are bad for you. For certain individuals one of the other will be significantly worse.

Morally wine isn’t evil. However if you are buying illegal marijuana (unless you’re buying direct from a grower that you know and trust) then you’re likely funding all kinds of unpleasant crime and human rights abuses.

In terms of childcare that really depends on the person. I’m reasonably lucid after a glass of wine or a spliff but many people will find one or both us too much for them. You must be able to care for the children that you are responsible for. If you are not it doesn’t matter why.

CovidicusRex · 19/05/2020 14:23

@Malone98 the use on an individual basis really isn't enforced though. Or are you saying it’s bad just because it’s illegal?

Malone98 · 19/05/2020 14:28

@CovidicusRex I do, of course, appreciate that it isn't enforced, and many people don't particularly hide that they are smoking it. As a Lawyer, I would have to say that I am against it because it is illegal. That doesn't mean I think awfully highly of alcohol either! Both create all manner of disasters.

CovidicusRex · 19/05/2020 14:46

@Malone98 you’d be surprised how many lawyers don’t have much regard for the law. I guess they side with Austin rather than Hart. I just thought that maybe you thought it was a risk in terms of legal sanctions.

mencken · 19/05/2020 14:48

if you are in a country where cannabis is illegal, unless you grow it yourself in a property that you own you are supporting knife crime, cuckooing, gang violence and county lines. You are therefore scum.

Malone98 · 19/05/2020 14:52

@CovidicusRex I suppose I have always believed that laws are there for a reason, whether we like them or not, and I try my best to abide by them and hope that people will do the same.

However, that doesn't mean that I can't sympathise with people who do smoke cannabis (or other acts to break the law). At the end of the day, everyone has stresses and I don't know everyone's circumstances! I'm not going to dob anyone in for something as small as smoking some wacky baccy! If they take it too far and get into trouble for it, that's on them.

CovidicusRex · 19/05/2020 15:00

@Malone98 agreed, it’s easy to use weed (along with doing a lot of other illegal things) without getting yourself into trouble. I’m not sure that I agree with laws being there for a reason etc. If you’re a legal positivist ay least then it’s easy to find endless examples of lots of terrible laws. On the other hand if you’re talking about law in a different sense then that’s quite different of course.
