Baby having really bad trouble feeding - help ?

Hi,

My DS is 11 weeks old. He has a tongue tie, I was going to breast fed but with everything going on his tongue tie appointment was cancelled.

Recently about the last couple weeks or so, worse the last couple days, he has been really fussy at the bottle. He acts starving, we see all the ques, we offer him the bottle and he takes it straight away, then after about a minute he throws his head away, starts shaking his head, shrieking and moving his entire body about. He does this for about 3 minutes then he will either take the bottle and have it all, take the bottle and have 40-100ml or have tired himself out crying that much.

He goes between about 1 and a half hours to 2 and a half hours. Depends on what he has really.

Any help will be appreciated. My HV thinks it’s the tongue tie but I wondered whether anyone else had any ideas or past ezperiences

Thank you

Could it be the flow of the test is too fast? It sounds like he wants the milk but is struggling to be comfortable whilst drinking.

Could you try a couple of different style tests? MAM ones are quite narrow and Nuby are wider, maybe a different size/shape will fit to his mouth better. You can get both from Amazon.

Alternatively it could be wind if hes gulping, try letting him take a few sips, then gently burp him, then try again?

Good luck!

There are a couple of possibilities - you could try giving him infacol before the feed, or Infant Gaviscon in case he has reflux.

Try infacol first as you can get it on amazon. Good luck, OP, I've had similar issues with DD and it's a nightmare Sad

I had this. I switched to newborn teats and anti colic bottles.

Actually in the very early days I got hold of some premmie teats from the hospital, they worked really well initially

I can't believe they cancelled the appointment. I'll probably get shot for saying this but there are other illnesses in the world than this covid. It's like time has stood still. My baby is 12 weeks and has been in hospital twice over a 2 week period due to complications since birth and not once has he been checked over and I've asked so many times. Neither of us has had our 6 and 8 week check. When he had his jabs I asked the nurse for some advice. She told me to 'ring a doctor' i feel totally let down by my doctors. My son too had a tongue tie which stopped him from breastfeeding, the nhs was a 6- 8 week wait referral and waiting to be referred took 2 weeks. We ended up paying private at a lovely clinic in Manchester when he was 2 weeks old. £250 it cost but well worth it.

Really hope you get it sorted x

I would try different teats to see if it helps but if it is silent reflux, infacol makes my son's 100 x worse. He has a tongue tie and can bf with nipple shields fine. He gets very windy during feeds as swallows more air so needs burped every ounce, or did. At 16 weeks he started to burp himself fine.
