How much cows milk should a new one y/o get per day?

Hi Everyone,

My daughter turned one yesterday (sadly a bittersweet lockdown birthday) hooray! I transitioned from formula to cows’ milk (so far so good 😊). When I spoke to the Health Visitor for advice, she said I was feeding her too much milk and to start dropping off feeds.

Currently, I’m feeding her 3-4oz mid-morning, 3-4oz mid-afternoon then 6oz bedtime. The milk replaces her snacks. She eats her breakfast, lunch and dinner (healthy appetite). My family told me to ignore the HV as they’re talking rubbish (I'm being polite here LOL). Sometimes when you speak to a different HV, you get different advice….

I know every child is different but roughly how much milk should a one y/o be given on top of her food per day?

Please help a confusing mummy
Stay safe everyone

Hi, I'm not sure if this helps but, I had my sons year review over the phone on Tuesday and the HV I spoke to said over the next few months (he's just turned 10 months) he'll drop his midday bottle (he's on three 7oz bottles atm) and to transition his morning and bedtime bottles to cows milk when he's one and to start giving him multi vitamins then too.

She didn't give me a volume, so I assumed it would still be 7oz am and evening.

Personally if your dd isn't gaining masses of weight fast and isn't over eating, I'd carry on as you are.

Thanks Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese for your reply.

That makes sense. I'll be eventually changing the milk to first thing in the morning and the moving the breakfast to a few hours later to accommodate the nursery.

Do you mine if i ask, is your son a good eater?

At 12 months it's just 10 floz a day until they are 2 then there is no recommended amount.

This Guide is very good as it gives portion sizes, sample menus and even recipes Smile

Mine just had two small cups a day - about 3-4oz in a cup plus he has yogurt and cheese every day.

Selfsettling3 · 15/05/2020 16:45

They need 350mg of calcium a day, this can be from a number of sources, milk, yoghurt, cheese, fortified cereals and bread.

GrumpyHoonMain · 15/05/2020 16:45

My HV told me to aime what you do by 9 months - ie milk becomes the snacks, as that provides optimal growth. Ignore your HV. Milk is so much more nutritionally dense (it’s a complete protein) than other foods you might give to replace it!

GrumpyHoonMain · 15/05/2020 16:46

I think HV only give set amounts on milk when they believe a child might become obese (ie they are already over the chart).

Hi, DS had his appointment with his paediatrician this week (he was prem) and she said 500ml of milk per day, he’s 13 months. This includes milk plus anything he gets in his diet.
She said giving him a cup or two of milk plus milk on his breakfast and some dairy such as yoghurt and cheese etc is more than enough.
He currently has a cup of cow’s milk when he wakes up which he also drinks alongside his breakfast, We changed this From a morning bottle when he turned 1, and an 8oz bottle at bedtime which we are currently transitioning to cow’s milk and plan to change to a cup of milk in the next few weeks. To be honest sometimes he drinks it and sometimes he doesn’t.

About the advice is different for babies born prematurely, it's definitely 300 ml/10floz between the ages of 12 and 24 months for babies born at full term Smile

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 15/05/2020 17:50

@gymbunny76 not a problem. I hope it was helpful.
Eating wise he isn't bad, as in he'll eat whatever is put in front of him/given to him as we do both spoon and finger foods for him. He doesn't snack though, HV wasn't concerned by that as he has 3 meals a day and isn't interested in snacks even at nursery (when he was in) he refuses.

So a normal day of food is:
B - toast(wholemeal or fruit) porridge, crumpet or weetabix and half a banana.
L - pasta in sauce, sandwich or mashed veg with fruit and a yoghurt or if we're out I give him a pouch for ease.
D - whatever dh and I have or a premade mash and rice pudding or sugar free jelly.

He had a beaker of squash in the livingroom which he's very meh about. We've tried water and he totally rejects it.

Hi @JiltedJohnsJulie he was born at 34 so they treat his intake as essentially full term, plus he’s on the 90th centile 🙈
anyway I agree that at age 1 it should be cups of milk, 3 meals and snacks rather than bottles so we’re on the same page!

gymbunny76 · 17/05/2020 05:55

Thanks for your advice everyone...
@JiltedJohnsJulie - I'll take a look at that guide

What yoghurt have you all been feeding your LO? I've feeding her Natural Greek (when I can get it, not Greek Style) or Yeo Valley Natural or Petit Filous (i think she's ready for the big pot now).

My DD is 14 months and we don't worry about her milk intake because like yours she eats well at every meal.

She has 7oz on waking at 5am (kill me now)
5oz mid morning nap
5oz at bedtime

I think a HV would say she's having too much but she enjoys it and so I don't see any harm. My older DD had milk before bed until she was 3 religiously (in a cup) I really wouldn't worry too much about her milk intake unless you start substituting them for her meals which you aren't.

startswithanL · 17/05/2020 06:39

Also lots of yoghurt and cheese we give her a range of yoghurts but she loves the yeo valley natural yoghurt with fruit or the little yeos kids fromage frais pots - forgot to add DD is still having a bottle and will until she is maybe 2

Abouttimemum · 17/05/2020 09:52

@gymbunny76 He has natural yoghurt mixed with berries (or whatever fruit I have in the house) at the moment with lockdown I’m buying frozen berries. I have little yoghurt pot size tupperware as well so I can take done with me when out and about.
