When do newborns need more stimulation?

My newborn (three weeks old) is in a cycle that consists of feed, nappy change, cuddle, sleep, which he repeats around six or seven times a day.

How long does this phase last for and when will he start looking for and/or needing something different/more?

I’m trying to appreciate and cherish this current phase as I know it won’t last forever, but I’m struggling a little bit with the monotony and repetition.

My boy is 11 week old and has found his voice. Hes so noisy. He also dosent nap for as long anymore so no time to myself so you enjoy it. Smile

Hi OP. I found this phase utterly boring and didnt particularly enjoy it. At around 5 weeks old my son started to be able to see bright colours. I bought some muslins from Etta Loves that are black and white, and he stared a lot at these.

Hes 7 weeks now and will happily be put under a baby play gym for 10-15mins. He doesnt reach for anything just yet, but he likes starting at the different colours and into the mirror.

Just hang in there. In my opinion this phase is the worst. It does get better though.

Thanks! When do babies start smiling? Mine looks like he is smiling sometimes, but apparently it’s not a ‘proper’ smile at this stage.

Ahhh this is the funny bit, where everything is wondrous and exciting and exhilarating and also really dull!

DD was smiling at 6 weeks, and a bit more interactive then too, but at this point all your baby needs from you is love and cuddles. Take the time to rest and chill, I'd say boxsets, biscuits and endless snuggles. It's just a little longer.

Thanks - I know I should be appreciating and savouring every moment, especially as I don’t plan to have more than 1 child!

Also 6 weeks for smiles. My son cracks out maybe a smile a day for me and his Dad, but will grin at his reflection in a mirror all day long!

the baby will tell you. my baby is now 4 months and if he's left without entertainment for more than a few minutes he shrieks like some kind of exotic bird.
