Do I need to do this with my two week old and if so, what sort of surface is best to place baby on their tummy and for how long?

No you don't have to, it's totally up to you and if your baby is ok with it.

I wouldn't do more than 5 minutes yet and I wouldn't leave the room.

Any soft surface will be fine. If you haven't got something like a playmat is just put down a soft blanket.

Congratulations on your new LO Thanks

You can do it on your chest, just lean back a little so not too flat to begin with.

From speaking to parents of older children, tummy time is a relatively new concept.
Lots of people didn’t do it and their children are just fine.
My dts are 10 and we tried to do it as much as possible when they were babies because they were premature and needed a bit of extra help with muscle development.
It’s fine to pop them on your legs or chest.

Little and often, if baby starts to grizzle pick her up, give her a big cuddle and do something else. If you’re on Facebook, follow a group called the sensory sessions. They do tummy time Tuesday, and it is excellent. She is completely non-judgemental and explains why things are done in a particular way.

I was told by my midwife that TT can be done from birth. I started TT with my little boy at 10 days old and he loves it.

Tummy time is not necessarily flat on the floor.i reclined a lot at that time with Dd on my chest. Later I used recline with knees bent up and have her on my legs. She hated being flat on the floor unless I was with her.

I’ve always thought tummy time was total shit. They hate it! A baby that’s carried a lot will develop good head strength.

ShirleyPhallus · 11/05/2020 14:30

We do it in all ways, on chest, over legs, on pretty much any surface as long as it isn’t too soft and the baby supervised

My baby hated it to start with but now loves it and the progression of lifting her head is amazing to see one day to the next

My baby absolutely hated it - couldn’t be on their front for more than 30 seconds before a meltdown. Once they started rolling over at 5 months, put them on the floor and they are never off their belly. Even sleep on front sometimes now.

Mine would have just screamed at that age. She spent a lot of time lying on my chest, though. We started doing it properly when she was about 4 months and less screamy in general.

I remember the HV suggesting I do tummy time with my screaming, refluxy newborn and just thinking ‘are you mad, woman?’

Kangourou · 12/05/2020 19:11

I only ever put mine on her tummy to do up sleepsuits that buttoned up the back. She quickly started lifting her head for a nosy around Wink
