Buggy boards-any good?

I am thinking IG getting a buggy board for my 3yo to stand on when we go for walks with our baby. With the lockdown, we are mainly walking in the woods near our road but she gets tired and wants us to carry her as we can't take our double buggy to the woods -it's too heavy and difficult to manoeuvre in there. Can anyone recommend one? Do your children like them?

Thinking 'of' not 'IG'

I wanted one having read about them but dh wasn't keen. When I then saw one 'in the flesh' it looked so awkward that I'm pleased we didn't. They stick so far back that I think that walking any distance would be very uncomfortable especially if either parent is small

IncrediblySadToo · 07/05/2020 21:27

Personally I don't like them. Possibly because I'm barely 5ft and find it difficult to push the buggy around the child. Though some buggy's are easier than others I also found they weren't great on rough ground

For a 3yo I'd get a balance bike (I think they're better on the rough ground like in the woods.

We got one when our daughter was about 3. It’s the generic one... lascal I think, on an uppababy vista. Basically, it’s awkward, does stick out at the back a lot so you have to adjust your gait to stop from kicking it. It also doesn’t do well off road, and I can only use it on fairly smooth paths. It makes the whole buggy awkward to manoeuvre and takes some practice. BUT I wouldn’t be without it. The alternative would be never walking anywhere because my now-4-year old is so lazy and whingy that constantly chivvying her along makes me want to smash my head against the nearest tree. Her preschool is a 1.5 mile walk away and (pre lockdown) we did it with her on the buggy board (it would honestly take about 2 hours if I made her walk. Sometimes she walks home, when we’re not constrained by time, and it does take 2 hours!) So basically it’s mega awkward, but for us, essential.

Definitely a good balance bike. Big proper wheels (not tiny plastic ones) so it copes with all terrain. Worked really well for us anyway 4 kids, each 2 years apart, never done double buggies or buggy boards.

boatyroo · 07/05/2020 21:37

I have found a buggy board really useful. I didn't get one to start with because I thought it looked awkward but have actually found it ok. Only problem is that 3 year old wants to only ride on the buggy board and never walk, so often we go out with baby in sling instead as then he walks without complaining too much.

minipie · 07/05/2020 21:41

It was fantastic for us BUT you need a buggy where the handle extends a long way. For example we had the Bugaboo Bee and it worked really well but I then tried it on a Phil & Ted and it was really annoying.

peajotter · 07/05/2020 21:42

I used it a lot when I had a baby on the nursery run. But it does get in the way a bit, and is no good off road.

Once I had a buggy that worked for both, I would pack a sling for the baby when the older one wanted to ride.

If you get a balance bike also invest in a piece of string to pull them along when they’re tired!

caffeinebuzz · 07/05/2020 21:43

Wouldn't be without it. A bit awkward but otherwise we're really constrained in how far we can walk due to pace on the way to anywhere and tired legs on the way back.

Not great at very rough terrain but we use it on woodland paths without a problem.

Orangedaisy · 07/05/2020 21:44

Loved mine. But we were walking on pavements to and from town (25 minute walk very steep hill so no suitable for balance bike or little legs). I am tall so had no problem with it.

june2007 · 07/05/2020 21:59

I had one and never needed a double bggy. (3 yr between my 2.)

snowball98 · 07/05/2020 22:04

We had one when our kids were the same ages. Found the older one wanted to jump on and off quite a bit, but we definitely found it helpful if we were walking to get somewhere rather than just going for a stroll

Spainintherain · 07/05/2020 22:39

Thank you all

If you’re considered a balance bike instead I would say consider a scooter. Much easier to pull along with one hand whilst pushing buggy with the other, also easier to hook over buggy handle when they decide they don’t want it

Pipandmum · 07/05/2020 23:21

Had one but either it wasn't very compatible with my buggy but it was very uncomfortable to use. I had to arch over my son (20 months older than my daugher) to push the buggy (it wasn't my height as I'm almost 6ft). Plus my son didn't really like using it. If he got tired he would rather perch on the front of the buggy.

JustStayHome · 07/05/2020 23:26

I hate them

But because one fell on my head from a height....
I was at work as a nanny and sat on the floor with two 8 month old babies, Another nanny closed the wardrobe behind me, which had the buggy board on and it fell down and hit me on the head.
Bad concussion, off work for two weeks.
Just glad it didnt land on the babies

Sorry.... Just brought back the memory
Anyway

I dont like them, they are very difficult to handle.

Have you seen the little seats you can attach to the back of buggies?
Not sure what they are called, sorry

Rainallnight · 07/05/2020 23:30

They’re very convenient, but personally, ours buggered my back. I’m not very tall, and I really felt the strain across my shoulders and the base of my neck. It’s still causing me problems, despite not having used the buggy board in weeks now because of lockdown.

But it is hard if they’re just too tired and won’t walk.

switswoo81 · 08/05/2020 21:53

Used a bugaboo cam with.bugaboo board and found it brilliant. 3yrs between dc. Found I used it a lot in shops and town for safety reasons rather than tired legs.

LoKiMummy · 08/05/2020 21:56

I just have one off amazon, not sure what it’s called. But it’s been amazing for me

Tyrannosaurusdrip · 08/05/2020 22:13

We have one. My 3yo was excited for it and then totally refused to use it. She prefers to go in the basket under the buggy (she's petite and fits nicely).
I find it awkward to push round and fold up if I take it off. Doesn't do anything other than flat pavement well.
She walks well and has since before she was 18 months, but I had wanted something to help 'contain' her a bit as she's a bit wild. Turns out she wants to help push or hold on or ride underneath. We hardly use it.

susanandherwine · 09/05/2020 01:15

i use them all the time and its very fun
