Qs about pocket nappies

Am thinking of going over to mainly using pocket nappies, but have some qs. I have read the old threads on pocket nappies but I've still got some qs for all you experts, please.

I see you can stuff them with microfibre dishcloths from Tesco (thanks MN!), old terry squares etc. Do these work as well as proper fitted stuffers? Or are they less absorbant? Don't they wriggle out of place? Can I really just cut one of my terry squares in half and fold it into the pocket? Presumably this sort of stuffing dries much quicker than the multilayer shaped ones.

I have one Wonderoo that I've been trialling and it seems to work fine without any liner - poo just peels off as you bend the nappy. Are there any disadvantages to doing this? Will the inner stain eventually?

Do the beautiful colours come off in the wash if you do them at 60 degrees? I wouldn't normally wash anything coloured over 40 degrees cos I find it leaks but do wash nappies at 60 about every 3rd or 4th wash.

And finally - which pocket nappy would you recommend? I've only tried the Wonderoo which has occasionally leaked pee, but that may have been me leaving it too long / not doing it up right. Factors are:

Would prefer BTP or at least more than 1 size (know they often don't really do newborns)
DS is currently 14 mo, tall, slim and very very wriggly. He's a bit prone to nappy rash, so fleece linings seem like a good idea, although was thinking of using fleece liners as well (currently using paper)
Marginally prefer Aplix as feels securer but willing to be convinced that poppers are as leak free. Can't be doing with nappy nippas
Don't want to spend shedloads of money (who does?!) but am planning to carry on using terry squares some of the time to cut costs
Want something quick drying - very important this one
We have very hard water so something that can stand up to that. No tumble drier.
Not particularly bothered about cute colours, patterns etc - especially not if they cost more money.

What do you reckon?

Thanks very much!

I can answer some, Nappyzone will do the rest.

  1. Depends on the nappy - swaddlebees are too narrow to stuff with anything else, fuzzis, wonderoos, and bumgenius I fnid I can stuff with anything.

  2. Mine aren't stained

  3. Colours are fine for me

  4. Which preferred? For birth to potty I am actually liking the bumgenius now (I hated the old ones) - they don't give the wing droop that the wonderoos do, and they aren't so baffling in the small setting as mommy's touch. Sized - fuzzis for me, they are much more forgiving than the swaddlebees (which seem to be dependent on your child having just the right shape arse - mine is fine, others I have recommended them to are apparently not )

Bumgenius give you your aplix thing too

They are one of the more pricey ones though!

They dry quickly

Nappyzone is pocket obsessed though so she knows oodles more makes.

Why do mine always, but always, leak??? DS isn't that heavy a wetter - he can wear a tots for 3 hours +. But the fuzzis leak with just one wee and so did the Swaddlebees and my home made Chloes Toes/ Any tips?

Flamesparrow · 17/09/2007 20:20

The fuzzis I find need to be very very snug, the swaddlebees depend on the bum shape... not tried the others.

My most reliable though are my weenotions

Thanks! I guess the question I should have asked and didn't is 'what's the disadvantages?' Leaking is a pretty major one! (I know cost is another) Does one style tend to fit one baby for ever or do you have to change over as their bodyshape changes? Don't really want to have to buy a second shape

See Flame, didn't I say the BumGenius were good....

mine are in the loft now though

Flamesparrow · 17/09/2007 21:36

I think it could be a body shape thing - either that or the V2 bumgenius are veeeeeeeeeeery different to the original ones which I hated ( bagpuss)

welcome to the dark side You can use those cleaning cloths and stuff as a booster but i find the purpose made ones more up to the job though the aforementioned are handy for boosting a night nappy or a day one for that matter and helping htem go a bit longer. Using a purpose one is maybe slimmer than stuffing a terry square inthere which i reserve for doing at night though i wouldnt advise them at night particularly though they would do the job over stuffign can be problematic -hence i have two parters for night and pockets for day - am i boring you yet?

The swaddlebess are noutoriusly temperamental as are the peapods i am hearing. Alot depends on finding one to suit you - im luckty apart from the two ive mentioned i have never had any leakage issus as its all about getting the stuffign right too. The b t pottys are mommys touch (confusing on a small settign but at 14month you would go straight into large settign as you would a bumgenius (very reliable workhorse type of pocket with aplix supplied with insert), wonderoos - you have tried - lower rise i find but works well but poppers tend to pee me off. Happy heiny onesize - very nice - thicker bands of material covered aplix so keeps nice and tidy but then i suppose more for a toddler to grab to rip of but i havent experiecened this yet. Cant get you excited about patterns so i wont go there.

Inners have never stained apart form on a ov lined swaddlebee - no probs with any staining - inserts may go a bit grey but again no poo stains so who cares.

Microterry inserts absorb quick gushes and hemp holds more fluid but slower to absorb (ellas house nice and tin as a booster under a microterry), ptit dessous bamboo inserts very absorbant and im liking these but take a bit of drying. I wash at 40 and then every 4 washes or so do a 60 and never had a problem with colours etc...

I owuld recommend you try a bumg and a happyheiny then and go from there. The wonderoo and mommys touch are both poppers. Failing that a fuzzi and if in a medium weight range ou may get through with one of those dependant on size of babe etc... There are charts and rise chart/ weight on my site on the fuzzi bit.

All my pockets for daytime use tend to dry in a couple of hrs and the inserts in a day so perhaps a day or overnight in deepest darkest winter on a rad. Dont put your pockets on a rad though a they may melt!

The bg are £14 each but when you love them you can buy 10 for £133!!! HH are £12.50 and both come with inserts. Happy browsing. You can get me and flame through the small business classifieds or google me at nappyzone. Have fun!

Never had bad feedback on the hh or the bg if that helps but theres always a first!

nappyzone - do you use poppered vests over your pockets? Do you find this causes wicking? I can´t use a poppered vest over my swaddlebees´ but over wonderoos it normally works fine although sometimes, just sometimes, will wick.. any experience??

For my 2 cents, I really like fuzzis but had a couple of poo leaks so they obviously needed to be on tighter.. personally I prefer wonderoos, they aren´t as slim but I find them more reliable and I love the btp aspect. I think the cost of fuzzis would get out of hand with me too quickly! I wash them at 40 with occasional 60 wash and no change in the colour. I also have a couple of swaddlebees which dh loves because they are so slim fitting and look almost like a disposable (except much prettier, of course!) but I can´t wait to get rid of them. I find them a right faff to stuff because you stick the inner in, get it all laying flat and then as soon as you take your hand out and the nappy bunches, the inner bunches as well and you have to try and lay it out again. If the inner isn´t perfectly flat then it leaks! Plus which ds was a great shape for these at first but suddenly has developed thunder thighs so is on the last setting of the medium ALREADY. Which I´m not too impressed about.

nappyzone · 18/09/2007 10:20

yes thats exactly what i dont like about swadders - the stuffing isnt straight fwd as the inserts seem to big!

Anywya i dont use vests that fassten under i use un poppered vest as if they were gettign a toot tight or the nappy was gettign full to its limit we woulg get some wicking yes - i have bought some 2 sizes to big that fasten under and these are fine but the necks gape on them a bit. normal big boy vests for me from matalan....

Flamesparrow · 18/09/2007 13:32

I just put DS in big vests (well, the ones for his age ). I use the AIO swaddlebees so haven't experienced the bunching.

Lovage · 18/09/2007 13:36

Thanks Nappyzone (and others!) that's great. That makes a lot of sense about the inserts. Sounds like you need more inserts than pocket bits since they're the bit that takes longer to dry.

Is the poppered vest thing an issue with pocket nappies in particular? Or is it to do with microfibre cos of the way it holds liquid? I ask cos am also thinking to get some fluffles and I do tend to dress DS in poppered vests cos it stops him getting crumbs in his nappy! No idea how he does it through a wrap and a terry, but he does...

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 18/09/2007 13:44

No, if you have a PUL wrap then they are normally fine.

nappyzone · 18/09/2007 14:09

i tended to findit happened with pocket nappies with rolled out fleece inners on like happy heiny drybee and greenkids - bumg and fuzzi dont but i couldnt tell you if it happens on them as rather than faffing i just stopped using poppered vests.
