Advice on brushing toddlers teeth

Our daughter is 18 months and doesn't like having her teeth brushed. She's not at the screaming tantrum end. We are though not doing them for 2 minutes or a proper job. We've tried making it fun and brushing dolly's teeth, her hand etc.
Any advice? Is my expectation of 2 minutes and a proper job unrealistic at this age? Thanks

Following for my 13mo. He has never had what I'd call an adequate teeth brushing and I feel so guilty but even pinning him down helps little. Sad

My dd loved imaginative play from a very young age so if she got awkward about teeth brushing when she was a toddler I would turn it into a role play game eg I pretended to be the dentist. Very tedious but it worked for us.

In youtube there are loads of videos for toothbrush timers. We have used these for years for my 5 year old and think they are brilliant. They have a picture that is hidden that reappears as the time decreases. Might be worth a try?

Me and DS play the "buritto game" where I wrap him in a towel (pins his arms down) and sing silly songs about being a buritto, pull faces in the mirror etc then I manage to get a quick 30sec proper brush in, then I let him go and he takes over. It's been part of the routine since he was very small so he knows what to expect, he sings the songs with me etc.

I use the YouTube songs, there's loads to choose from. Also there's a hey duggee toothbrushing episode which is quite good and the song is 2 minutes long.

Make them laugh. I do tickles, round and round the garden, and peekaboo. Each laugh buys me a quick brush. If they're really tired and grumpy and shouting, I just get on and get it done while their mouth is open shouting Blush

There was a thread about this just the other day.

No toddler likes having their teeth brushed! Just get it done stop fannying around. Unless you want them in the dentist getting fillings?

I used to bribe Dd with songs from you tube. There is a particularly annoying thing on there called cocomelon, Dd loved it. The deal was she could watch it while I brushed.

She's 4 now and does her own in the morning and I do them at night (without the annoying songs).

Does anyone know the recommendations for teeth brushing? Is it 2 minutes like us?

I usually pretend to find things in dc's teeth while I am brushing. Starts off as things that she has eaten that day and gets steadily more ridiculous- a monkey, an aeroplane etc. Tonight ended with me having to fight off a nippy crab with the toothbrush. Hmm
It keeps them occupied and makes them laugh so it's easier to See the teeth that I'm brushing.

2 minutes for an adult averages 4 or 5 seconds per tooth. Id go for 5 secs per tooth for baby too as a minimum then anything over is a bonus.

Promises them some sweets afterwards Grin

Seriously, I used to have to do holding down tooth brushing when my son was a toddler. It was just a (long) phase we went through, then came out the other side. It was ok in the end.

I was great with the 2 minute brush until DS turned 13 months and then that went to hell .

I’m lucky if I get a decent 30 second brush in now and even that ends with him screaming and in tears 😔
