Extending/Dropping Night Feed but keeping Morning Wake Up Time

My DS is almost 3 months old and we are trying to extend the time we feed him at night, in the hopes of eventually dropping a night feed. Where we used to wake him up, we now let him sleep and then feed him when he wakes up hungry. We were on a 4 hour-ish schedule where he fed at 7pm, put to bed at 8pm, and then feeds at 11pm and 3am, before starting the day at 7am. This was then extended to 11:30pm and 3:30am feeds with bed and morning time the same.

Last night he didn't wake until 12:20am, and then again at 5am. How much should we give him the feed before his morning one as he obviously won't have a full feed at both when they are so close together. He will usually have around 5.5 oz of expressed milk at each feed. Last night/very early this morning, DH fed him as much as he would have which was around 4.5 Oz, but when he woke this morning (he pretty much wakes up around 6:50am regardless of what time he feeds) he would only take 1 oz as he was clearly still full.

Should we reduce the middle of the night feed, and try to keep the morning one the same? Or the other way round? I ideally want to keep our day schedule the same as it seems to be working, and having struggled to put him to sleep for the first 2 months, we finally have something that works.

My ideal plan for the longer term is for him to feed around 1am as DH is a night owl so he can do that feed before the goes to bed, and then I would do the morning shift. But before we get to that point, how do I figure out how much to give him without under or over feeding him, whilst still trying to stick to some sort of schedule.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated! Thanks

Of he’s taking 5.5 floz at 5, why don’t you try the next feed at 8 am and treat 5 as the first morning feed?

It’s very unlikely that he’s going to keep to any sort of schedule fir a long time, usually, just when you think things are working, they have a habit of changing Smile

I see your logic, it may work but it's pretty early to expect that just now........
