Week old baby constantly feeding through night

My baby arrived a week ago at 34+6. She weighed 4lb8oz and has dropped to 4lb4oz but now gaining weight so all good.
We are currently on the neonatal unit but due for discharge tomorrow.
I am breastfeeding her. In the day it’s every 2-3 hrs, but this evening she has not stopped! As soon as I put her down she cries and roots.
Wet and dirty nappies aplenty.
Am I doing something wrong?!
If I have no sleep then fine, just need some reassurance really.

You’re doing nothing wrong and congrats on your baby girl. Baby stimulates your supply or ‘puts in an order’ by cluster feeding. Feeding is also comfort for a new baby in the new, loud, bright probably scary world.

Willow4987 · 28/04/2020 03:21

Nothing wrong at all OP. Unfortunately in the early days they feed so much to get your supply up and because they’re having massive growth spurts. It will settle down over the coming weeks

Yep. Newborns feed all night. Totally normal.
Congratulations x

Congratulations on your gorgeous little girl. Regarding her feeds, at this stage she's finding her rhythm, the best thing to do is to go with it.

She is gaining weight, nappies are good and she's feeding well, you're both doing fantastically!

Naturally take as much care of yourself as you can, ensure you're hydrated and eating well and try and nap when she does. Partly she will be needing your closeness as comfort too but it sounds like she's growing beautifully.

If you're at all concerned, then have a chat with the Paediatrician (you can request this) before you're discharged.

Congratulations! Newborns feed all night - a midwife told me they feed even more during 1am and 5am as it's during this time your supply for the next day is made. Not sure if it's true but mine all fed alot through the night in the early days.
Ask your midwife before you get discharged if you are worried.

All normal! Congratulations!

Neeentay · 28/04/2020 03:37

Congratulations! That’s totally normal. You’re in for a tough few weeks but it will get better!

ColdCottage · 28/04/2020 03:45

This is normal. You are doing a great job. It eases up soon and you will get more sleep. Try and tKe naps whenever you can. Well done you. I hope you are both home soon. It's hard but will pass.

I use my phone to stop me nodding off and eat loads to keep you both going in the day.

Totally normal. Babies go through regular growth spurts where they'll suddenly up their feeding volume and frewuency for a few days. Typically happens around day 7-10, then at about 3 weeks, then again around 6 weeks, etc, etc. They feed frequently to stimulate your milk supply, to match their growing stomach size. Look up cluster feeding. Kellymom is a good website for baby feeding info.
My 4 week old baby has been attached to my boob for about 8 hours on and off tonight. She's finally fallen asleep!

Hannie123 · 28/04/2020 04:32

I have a new baby and I am starting to come out what you are going through. You are absolutely doing nothing wrong! It happens, they drink a lot, cluster feed etc. But it is all normal, so you don’t need to worry. Flowers

Thank you all. That middle of the night feeling is a weird one isn’t it! Had a couple hours sleep and all seems so much better now.
Thanks for the reassurance all.

Congratulations.

Yes, quite normal. It is hard work being a mum. When you get home make a little basket of treats for yourself with CDs, some snack bars, magazine etc
I used to put a note on the door and have a nap every afternoon when baby went down about 2 pm. I didn’t do this until baby no. 3 so I am giving you this advice. It helps enormously I used to walk at 3pm because the other two were at school. My body got used to that hour and I would have a deep sleep which helped get me through the night feeds.
The feeding will change and then change again when she has growth spurts. Make sure you get out for a walk in the fresh air as much as possible. You need to look after yourself as well as baby.

aimzxd · 28/04/2020 06:30

It helps to nap when baby naps through the day as much as possible

Pickles89 · 28/04/2020 07:40

Yup, babies do that!

How confident are you with your latch? The better the latch, the more effectively she'll be draining the breast, the more comfortable it'll be for you and the sooner (theoretically!) she'll be full and ready to sleep.
