Formula

Hey y'all. I'm a first time mom and I have NO idea how to go about choosing formula for my baby. I'm being induced in 2 days at 36 weeks exactly due to high blood pressure and I have yet to figure out formula for my baby. I've asked several friends how they figured out what formula to use and some of them said they waited till after the baby was born and asked the hospital staff which formula would be best and then went and bought it after the baby was born. Other friends bought a large supply of formula before their baby was born. And some called a pediatrician before their baby was born and asked what they recommended typically to first time moms. So my question to you all is, how did you pick a formula to feed your baby and should I go out and buy some today since he'll be here in 2 days! Thank you in advance Smile

I just picked one that was readily available in my local shop so I knew I could always access some if needed. Are you in the U.K(asking because you sound like you might be in the US)?

I was breastfeeding and had a major struggle and mental breakdown and sent DH the shop at 3am for formula (long before lockdown) and be just bought what he thought was best.

We use SMA first infant milk.

It's so confusing for first time parents and advice is always so different

It's all the same really. I doubt a great deal of difference. We started on sma as was planning to bf so didn't have any in, that failed so mil got us sma.

Moved into hipp as baby wasn't pooping bit that in the end was more down to that being normal for a newborn i doubt hipp had much to do with it.

The sma mixes better than hipp and is less annoying than hipp. Hipp comes in 2 foil bags in a box. Sma just in a tub.

Baby doesn't give hoot if it is sma or hipp.

Think on hipp she has possibly had firmer poo though? We went back to sma as i bought some when it was hard to get formula. And she had a weurd runny dark poop. But might just be adjusting?

Maybe some babies tumnies react differently but don't suppose you'll really know less you try it.

I would like to know what's so good about piccalo though? It's expensive.

I did a lot of research into formula and choose Sma. Sma Pro was really good to start off with but after a couple of weeks changed to cow and gate as Sma Pro wasn't feeding my DS. This was a huge mistake, after 10 days on the formula he had horrendous colic so changed back to Sma, but this time the advanced formula. We have had no issues on this.
Every baby is different. If your LO doesn't like it they will let you know.
It is all personal preference, as mentioned above they all pretty much contain the same thing. Unless you pay a fortune for it. Think about your budget and what you can get close to home 😊

I'm afraid it's mostly trial and error as my son started on aptimel, then tried cow and gate (wouldn't even drink that) then sma then sma hungrier baby milk.

In terms of nutritional value, all the formulas are much the same, but you might find one formula suits your baby better than another. We started on one and after a few weeks my lo developed silent reflux, some mums here suggested another formula and we switched and her reflux settled down. There's a bit of try one and see how it goes to it!
