Morning cough help

Hello

Dd has had a rubbish winter with bugs and sickness, since starting nursery Autumn.

At the start of lock down she got another round of tonsillitis and had antibiotics given over phone. Those have been finished for two weeks.

We have not been out for the full five weeks.

She is teething badly top and bottom.

The cough she developed with tonsillitis is still lingering, mainly when she wakes up. Sometimes in the night if she stirs but worse first thing in the morning.

I have given her piriton the last few nights as doctor prescribed that last time to try and shift it.

Could this be teeth causing excess saliva? She is soaking bibs during the day.

Anything else I could try and at what point would you ring doctor again. It's not a new cough as such, she's had it on and off since before Christmas. Albeit few periods of no cough.

Hi Op my DD was the same the Thursday before we went into lockdown she ended up going to drs had tonsillitis and was also given antibiotics she to had a cough in the mornings and sometimes at night when she was sleeping but it soon stopped I think after a week and a bit.
Not sure what caused it she's also teething so not sure if it could have been extra saliva or what.

When mine was a baby he had a cough every morning, and sometimes if he stirred in the night. As his elder sister is severely asthmatic he was referred to the respiratory consultant just in case he was going to follow in her foot steps, so to speak. Thankfully he isn't asthmatic but the consultant diagnosed post-nasal drip as the cause for his morning cough. Basically mucus dripping down the back of the throat during the night, and then when they wake it needs clearing so they cough. No medication requires. Tilting the cot can help a bit, and making sure they drink plenty. He's 4 now and still coughs the same if he's had a cold.

Oh and you both so much. That's a great help.

I should have said about asthma, she has been checked and was clear.

It's exactly as you both describe. Morning and sometimes if she stirs in the night. This morning seemed worse than yesterday but in fairness she didn't stir at all last night. No cough since up and about.

Just bumping this to see if this is reaching worrying point.

Cough continued so spoke to GP over phone and was prescribed blue and brown inhaler to try. We are maybe five days into that. She is coughing at about 3 am and on wakening. Also all nap yesterday. I did notice the heating was on then and wondered if that was causing something.

I've ordered a humidifier.

This cough is driving my crazy. Do you think I should push for her to be seen or give inhalers a little longer? There is certainly an improvement but nowhere near stopped.

Thank you.

Hello again I'm not sure the doctors will see her if it's only a cough she has.
Is her temperature normal? Is she eating and drinking fine op?

If you are really concerned give 111 a call and ask them for some advice.
I must admit I've got our heating back on today as it's gone rather cold again doesn't help we keep having really hot days and then cold days. Also does your DD suffer with any allergies such as hay fever? Sorry for all the questions op but if your truly worried give either 111 a call or your GP surgery as I know our GP surgery is seeing you still providing your not showing symptoms of covid 19

moobar · 11/05/2020 11:18

Questions welcomed, thanks for responding.

No allergies we know of but did try piriton for a while wondering whether to start that again.

Eating and drinking well, no temperature.

She sleeps well, just I wake with every cough and am shattered.

It's going right through me now.

Gp would only speak to me on phone I think. She had antibiotics at start of lock down but nothing since.

I would perhaps go back to GP and see if there's anything that can be done to test for allergies.

It could be hay fever perhaps at least it's doesn't sound like anything else otherwise your DD would be showing other symptoms other than the cough.

It doesn't help that we are all on high alert over this covid 19 it's putting us all on edge specially when it comes to our children.

Defiantly give GP a quick call again and see what they can advise Wink

Window open every night.
Works wonders for ds. He has asthma but hardly ever needs his inhaler.
Same for me.

moobar · 11/05/2020 20:13

Interesting about hay fever. We have dogs, but only in kitchen playroom part of house. We are on a farm and I've not noticed it more in yard.

I wondered about dust though, with the heating seemingly triggering it.

Window open a good idea as well, but so cold today!! I have bought a small bedroom heater to try instead of the central heating and turned that off in her room for now. Done a big Hoover today as well. And given her honey. If she coughs I'm going to cry,
