How to get an unconcerned almost 4yo to use toilet instead of bed!

DS is nearly 4 and is completely fine during the day but has still been wearing pullups for nights. Has been dry maybe 2 or 3 times a week during the summer so I thought I'd try a few nights without nappy as he was keen to do this. First morning he woke wet, then next was dry, next two wet. Thing is, he seems to make it through the night OK, but just can't be bothered to get up in the morning to use the loo - wd rather wet the bed and then continue to lie in it reading, singing to himself etc. He just seems completely unconcerned.

Anyone else's DS like this? Any ideas to encourage him to change, or shd we just go back to nappies for a while?

Reward chart?

I'd stick to nappies for a wee whiley longer.
But I'm a lazy moo.
Good luck whatever you decide.

I think that my DS1 was like this. We left nappies on him as they were always soaking wet in the mornings so we assumed he was wetting in the night. However, one night we forgot to put a nappy on and he was dry in the morning and went to the loo as soon as he woke up. We were amazed as he had never been dry when he got up before.

So the next night we left the nappy off again on purpose and he was OK all night but forgot first thing in the morning and weed as he was getting out of bed. Once we knew when he was doing it we reminded him before he went to bed and he has never wet it since.

Not sure putting him back into nappies would help. He is getting through the night OK so he doesn't really need them. He needs to be encouraged to get up rather than lie in bed - probably a star chart would do the job.

Another vote for sticking to nappies. He'll get there. My ds was in pull ups much later than this!

We're in a similar situation. We're sticking with the nappies for now. No point upsetting everyone by making a big issue of it. Although, we do draw attention to the dry ones.

Thanks for your thoughts. I haven't been able to check MN till now, so had been taking the risk of a few nights without - and, as it happens, the last three have been dry. I went in to him at 5am when he woke by chance this morning and he was dry then, which makes me think he's like niecie's and just needs a reminder for the morning. Fingers crossed for the next few and then I think we may have cracked it.

A few things i would do if you decide not to use nappies again are leave a potty in the room or make sure he can get to the bathroom ok. Get a waterproof sheet for the mattress then two kylie sheets (like caremats but its made of material and is washable with waterproof back) So if he wets you can replace the kylie without changing the whole bed, this was you have 3 chances before you have to strip the entire bed.

thanks for the extra tips!
