Sleepyhead - worth it?

Hi everyone

Just wondering if anyone used a Sleepyhead with their baby? I didn't with my first and ended up co-sleeping until he was 2 - was easier at first as we BF until 18 months. He loved the constant contact and closeness, was nice when he was a snuggly baby but when he's a toddler it was hell.

I don't really want to fall into the same trap again as it wrecked my shoulders. I'm expecting DC2 in sept. I would love a baby that sleeps this time 😂

So, is it worth the plunge? Did anyone use them at night?

Many thanks

100% worth it. My DD slept like a dream in it. We used it for naps and overnight. She's outgrown the original one (shes 11 months now) so shes now in the deluxe size and still sleeps like a dream! Smile

rainbowcakes · 25/04/2020 13:02

Oops to clarify - deluxe is the original sleepyhead, grande is the bigger size - she is currently napping in the grande in her cot Grin

Secretlifeofme · 25/04/2020 13:05

Sorry @rainbowcakes, but you're not supposed to use it overnight. That's why I didn't get one @espressoontap, because I worried that my baby might get used to it at nap time and then not be able to sleep without it at night.

@secretlifeofme Was just about to say I'm sure they're not tested and proven safe to be used for sleeping

espressoontap · 25/04/2020 14:36

Interesting about the overnight sleeps. I will give it some more though. Thank you, ladies.

Totally worth it 😊 my daughter was in hers until 10m and then transitioned to the normal bed, no issues at all. Total lifesaver for overnight stays at the grandparents and put straight into the next to me crib for overnight. I had no issues with overnight sleeping (but that's your decision to make) 😊

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/04/2020 15:45

Since they first came out there has been new found advise re: SIDS. Read up please before deciding and definitely don’t use overnight.

ScarfLadysBag · 25/04/2020 15:47

We used ours up until DD was 6mo or so. I researched and was comfortable with their use, others' mileage will vary. We found it really useful and didn't have any problems making the transition to normal mattress when she outgrew it. It was also handy to move around for daytime naps too.

2beautifulbabs · 25/04/2020 16:58

Yes sleepyheads are worth it my DD has the grande and it's brilliant she loves it to nap in and also if we have any rough nights of sleep with her if she's teething or unwell I normally put her in her pillow and she sleeps next to me

cheesybeano · 25/04/2020 18:21

@espressoontap I'd lean more towards a next to me crib that attaches to your bed for co sleeping, just for the reason that its safer for baby to sleep in and about the same price or cheaper

espressoontap · 25/04/2020 18:25

Hi everyone. Thank you very much. I will definitely give it more thought - have a while until September.

@cheesybeauno I had one of those and DS probably slept in it for a grand total of one night in total. I don't know if it was because of an awful / traumatic labour and the BF but he was very much a mummy's boy.

We used the sleepyhead until about 6 months for daytime naps only.

The instructions of the next to me crib we had specifically said not to put anything other than the mattress in it, so I never used SH for overnights.

It was fantastic for naps though, I would just pop it on the sofa and let my little one sleep whilst I did chores / watched telly, etc.

When we transferred him to his big cot we stopped using it and had no issues getting him to sleep in a bigger space.

So I would say great for supervised sleeping, although I know many use it overnight too. Maybe it depends on the crib you'll be using it with... check manufacturers advice.

DivGirl · 25/04/2020 21:07

DS refused to even entertain the idea of sleeping in his. We had a cocoonababy (not entirely sure how you spell it) and a sleepyhead - both on top of the wardrobe now. He didn't sleep anywhere other than in my arms or next to me in bed until he was 18 months. He still ends up in my bed most nights and he's 2.

I've heard people say they're like magic but they don't work for all babies.

happymummy12345 · 25/04/2020 21:11

We didn't, had no need, ds went from his crib to his cot no problem at all.

cheesybeano · 25/04/2020 21:14

My daughter was exactly the same breastfeeding, we just had a moses basket and gliding crib and it seemed more like it was that she just wanted to be close rather than where she was sleeping. Hopefully this little one will give you more sleep, though I look back now and have lovely memories of all the cuddles Smile tiring as it was at the time lol

CallMeOnMyCell · 25/04/2020 21:16

Worth every penny, my DD slept in hers for naps and overnight from 3 months, she’s now in the grande (she’s nearly 2) and always sleeps so well.

HelloRose · 25/04/2020 22:50

We bought one. Unfortunately DS didn't take to it at all so it was a waste of money. He prefered moses basket, cot or sling. Now giving it to my sister due in July

MrsP2015 · 25/04/2020 23:16

My dc sounds just like yours constantly wanting the bf and body contact!

I had a next to me crib and was all set on a sleepyhead but when I was pregnant some new negative research was done on it and so said no way. I didn't see the point in paying that much for somewhere to nap in the day when we had other flat baby spaces (pram/ carrycot plus baby chairs from birth.
It was something I really wanted and was disappointed not to have it as I'd read so so much good stuff about them but it was a risk I wouldn't take. God forbid my baby was hurt while in it I'd never have forgiven myself.

Anyway- glad I didn't have it as from 2 days old she would turn on her side (yes 2 days!)
So there's no way I'd have let a side lying newborn sleep in it!

My advice would be to lean away from it- unless it's for day naps only.
Not worth the risk when it's advised against.

However I have friends who used them (1 overnight). Another friend had one of those bean bag things she let her tiny baby sleep in, Inside the COT in its own room 😱 overnight!

If you're worried about safety overnight, I've seen lots of ads on insta lately about the new Purflo nest. It's apparently been designed for unsupervised sleeping.

purflo.com/baby-beds/

Note that they're calling it a 'baby bed' to differentiate from nests.

DS is 10 weeks old and we've had a Cam Cam nest (similar to sleepyhead). It's had on and off use. I think it was key to transitioning him to his bedside crib at about 2 weeks. The HV did say "you know they're not recommended overnight" and I replied yes, and she just left it at that. I felt like she had to say it but understood that parents will do whatever they can to just get through those early days. We eventually moved him onto a Babymoov cosydream which he still sleeps on.

In terms of naps, DS wouldn't, then would, then wouldn't nap in it! Just this morning I've managed to put him down for a nap in it for the first time in about 4 weeks. During that time he became more aware (and stopped feeding to sleep gah!) and would only nap on me or his dad after a battle to get him to fall asleep each time.

So overall, we've used our nest inconsistently but I'm glad we've had it as an option. No Moses basket since we had bedside crib plus nest. Just do whatever works! I laboured over so many purchasing decisions while I was pregnant (first baby though) to discover that all my careful plans couldn't be implemented anyway cos my baby decides what goes ☺️

At most you'll lose like £60 if you sell it second hand 👍🏼

LondonKiwi123 · 27/04/2020 11:41

@espressoontap p.s. I know what you mean about the sore shoulders! I've co-slept a few times and I get so rigid and uncomfortable :/ And co-sleeping only makes DS sleep that little bit better (wakes 6x a night!) so I've decided to persist with his own bed.
