Baby weight concerns

Hey all 😊
Sorry if this has already been asked before but just wondering what other mums are doing about weighing their babies during lockdown? I know you’re meant to take them to be weighed at drop in clinics once a month but obviously that’s not possible at the moment.
I have a 14 week old baby boy who is very smiley and has started giggling 🥰 he rolled over for the first time today. However - he is quite a sicky baby which gets me worried about whether he’s getting enough nutrients (he’s formula fed).
I’ve tried weighing him on our bathroom scales - by putting him in a large bowl 🙈 and with me holding him however I know this isn’t very accurate and I get a different weight each time.
Am I right to assume that if he was under nourished he wouldn’t be active and would likely not be a happy baby? He’s very active and inquisitive.
Thanks for reading xx

I've been using the bathroom scales but dd is 9 months old so a bit easier, I would otherwise look for chubby thighs and arms, growing out of clothes, achieving other milestones like alertness, coos, smiles. Responding to light, colours, hanging toys etc. If you have a kitchen scales it might be better for now. Try to move your bathroom scales into a certain position until you get consistent results. You stand on and take your weight, then stand on holding him and record the difference.

Hopefully some others will have some ideas too!

My HV said that if my DS is having plenty of wet nappies that’s a sign he is feeding and growing well. Also I’ve found it helpful to look back on photos from even 2-4 weeks ago as I can see the weight gain; I know that’s not fool proof but it’s an extra reassurance

Thanks for this ladies 😊
The other problem I’ve got is that he’s so long (91st percentile the last time the HV checked) so I think that makes him look slimmer then he is.
He’s definitely got chubby thighs though - gotta love this cute thigh creases 🥰

I'm just going with alert and happy but I would like to know if dd was still following her curve.

My girl is 14 weeks now too. I've jest weighed her by weighing myself on the scales in lb and then again holding her. I did it a couple of times to make sure it was accurate. Shes now 14lb.

Totally agree with what you've said. If he's bright and alert at times and meeting his milestones, he is getting enough Smile

So I’ve weighted him a few times using the bathroom scales and looking at the growth chart he has dropped on the curve slightly. At other times he was weighing just above the 50th and now he’s just below the 50th. Would you be concerned? As I mentioned in previous post he’s very active and alert when awake - has started laughing and rolling over and doing little baby crunches like he’s trying to pull himself up 😂

You only need to be concerned if there is a drop of several percentiles- it normal for it to fluctuate.
If he is producing wet nappies and seems happy and alert he will be fine. It's only a rough guide.
You could always phone your HV for reassurance though.

SquigglyOne · 25/04/2020 13:25

Thanks for this @Lalapurple. I’ll phone the HV if he drops much lower. I’m not overly concerned as like you said - he seems very happy in himself and we definitely have plenty of wet nappies 😂
Thanks again - very reassuring. Nervous FTM here - can you tell? 😂

My arm used to ache more every week so l knew she was getting heavier! Daughter was also a very sicky baby (formula fed too) but didn't stop putting on weight. Sorry not much help xx

Fatted · 25/04/2020 13:32

I wouldn't worry OP. If your baby is feeding, generally happy, having wet and dry nappies then I wouldn't bother getting them weighed.

Thanks ladies 😊

My HV told me she's happy for babies to "dance around" a line. Mine danced around the 50th and now tracks slightly under it at 6mo but he's not sharply dropping which is what the HV said to watch out for. She also advised looking at the overall picture - alert, meeting milestones, lots of good nappy output, content, generally healthy etc.

Thanks for this @KatnissK😊
