Does anyone have any alternatives to fish fingers for an easy dinner for 2 pre schools please? And/or freezer veg that isn’t peas?
Disclaimer- I am aware that home cooked is best etc but after something not overly processed for those busy times. I’ve read the ingredients on fish fingers and I’m happy with them.

We do sausages and mash :) Richmond frozen sausages and mccains frozen mash. Before all of this I would have made the sausages from chilled ones and peeled the potatoes but this just makes life easier for now! I find mixing a bit of gravy in with the mash makes it taste nicer then topping it along with the sausages in gravy.

The steam fresh veg bags are handy and tasty especially for smaller portions. Works out a bit more expensive though. Micro rice pouches (not frozen) or savoury rice. Chicken Kiev

I do Sainsbury's finest fish fingers, they're lovely. I do sweet potato fries which I chop and leave in a bowl of water but you can buy ready chopped or frozen. I serve with frozen broccoli, carrots and sweet corn.
My dd also likes asparagus and Morrison's do it frozen although I've not seen it for a few weeks.

AppleKatie · 23/04/2020 21:07

Frozen broccoli and frozen baby carrots are a hit in our house.

worriedmama16 · 23/04/2020 21:07

I also do sausage instead of fish finger but I buy them from a butcher
Annabel karmal has a frozen range although I've not tried it and Ella's kitchen does too.

What about waffles, beans and scrambled egg?
And some fruit?

I tell myself it’s healthier to give them “big chicken” (crispy chicken fillets from Iceland - big chicken nuggets basically) and smiley faces because there’s “more meat” and “more potatoe” than chicken nuggets and chips. Oh the lies we tell ourselves!!!!! I don’t like mash, neither do my kids, therefore I don’t make it and the one time I made it for DP it was a disaster, I always tried to buy the “finest” pre prepped mash etc but so far he’s rated McCain frozen mash the best and says it’s quite nice 🤦🏻‍♀️ Other than that, we do “big fish” and they eat a lot of omelettes, one child has a love for cheap tinned food Envy beef ravioli, spag Bol, beans/hoops and sausages etc. Vile.

Other quick meals are hot dogs just zapped in the microwave....I realise none of these are particularly healthy! One child likes sweet corn, sometimes I swap out chips and stuff for random things like Yorkshire puddings, couple of slices of french stick etc. My kids are weird.

I have to say, I’ve tried frozen brocolli and frozen green beans lately and they’re not bad! Saves a lot to waste too.

Namechangex10000 · 23/04/2020 21:15

And it is sometimes frowned upon, but one child also prefers cold food, so will often choose “packed lunch without the bread” type dinners, cold meats, cucumber and tomatoes, cheese etc

Make some pasta sauce and freeze in portions? Or do you just want stuff you can buy?

Stringervest · 23/04/2020 21:19

Cocktail sausages, ham, cooked chicken, slices of quiche, veggie sausages, mini portions of batch cooked spag bol, shepherd's pie or curry all work in our house. Also mini microwave or oven pizzas with fresh toppings or cut muffins in half and freeze, then defrost and add tomatoes purée, cheese, toppings and grill.

Non freezer foods include omelette, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, cheese on toast, pesto pasta, beans on toast and spaghetti hoops. All of these are v v quick to make - we both work full time do speed is key in this house.

For veg, aside from peas frozen corn on the cob isn't bad.

There are loads of bags of mixed veg which make sure the kids get all coloured vegetables.

HistoryHeroes · 24/04/2020 21:16

Tomato pasta with cheese on top

Littleshortcake · 24/04/2020 21:19

An easy quick dinner- use budget buns/naps and top with tomato sauce and cheese/ ham and pineapple (I buy the pineapple in the section near ready made jelly in clear containers)

Mine are young and like these. You could also sprinkle on some frozen sweetcorn.

Also frozen corn on the cob is a great one for young children

Burger baps not budget baps Grin

Littleshortcake · 24/04/2020 21:21

They take 5 mins max toasted in the grill.

PanicAtTheDiscLo · 24/04/2020 21:31

I keep a pack of the mini wraps in and we do wrap pizzas
Also leftovers

Morechocmorechoc · 24/04/2020 21:37

If you want veg in the form of healthy but oven cooked try strong roots, they also do healthy veg burgers, in most supermarkets. They are rolling out a little roots version for kids, currently only in asda. It's what I give my fussy little one, he loves the purple carrot brocoli balls!

nannymags · 25/04/2020 21:58

frozen spinach in a little ramekin dish with a nob of butter and frozen grated cheese is a nice little side dish of easy greens.

small bag of frozen chopped onion, plus 1 bag frozen butternut =butternut soup or sauce for pasta/rice .

frozen mediterranean mix with pre-cooked rice puch and grilled chicken or poached salmon.

waitrose and marks do nice fish fingers with real fish.

I like to marinade the little chicken strips and freeze them so all i need to do is defrost and pop in oven.

potato croquettes
