Good books about death for preschooler

DD is 3.5. My grandmother died in the autumn and she got interested in death then, the virus has increased this and she's talking quite a lot about dying.

I'm trying to be open and matter of fact, reassuring her but also I think she needs to know that death happens to everyone eventually.

And if the worst happened and a family member died either of cv or natural causes, it would be worse if I'd said they were definitely safe.

Any books or tips? She's fairly advanced in the books she likes so not toddler books.

What do you want her to know? Do you want her to have a nice image of an afterlife or just a natural recycling of energy cycle of life kind of thing.

The Paper Dolls, by Julia Donaldson, is good. Not about death per se but it talks about things that are gone living on in your memory (including a granny).

People on here also recommend Badger’s Parting Gifts, which we never really got on with, and Goodbye Mog.

My DD is also 3.5 and my mum has just died, following my dad 18 months ago so we’ve had a lot of practice.

Lion King also good though not a movie obviously.

Waterbugs and dragonflies by Doris .
Beautiful, open-ended and not faith-based.

Always and Forever by Debi Gliori is a lovely book that gently touches on the subject of death for young children. I am an early years teacher and have used it with children who have experienced loss and recommended it to parents and the feedback has always been very positive. Child bereavement uk have lots of resources too. Sorry for you loss Thanks

I bought this one when we had a sudden and unexpected bereavement in the family, DD was 5 at the time. It seemed to help her process it.

"Badger's parting gifts" is nice.

Sorry for your loss. I have quite a lot of death books & the one I like is Freddie the leaf

inappropriateraspberry · 18/04/2020 18:35

Not a book, but there's an episode of Topsy and Tim where the dog dies. It's a nice way to bring the subject up and talk about remembering the good things.

ludicrouslemons · 18/04/2020 20:28

Thank you everyone, I'll take a look at those examples.
