Hi everyone

Hope you’re all keeping safe during lockdown !

Wondered if you all had ideas for a baby safe garden ? Currently we gave a large area or peddles, we have dogs so this was ideal for us to begin with and we don’t have green fingers so low maintenance. Now we have a10 month old baby boy and the summer in approaching and we need to get it sorted ASAP. Especially in this lock down as it’s driving me crazy being stuck in the house while it’s beautiful outside.

E have had a quote for artificial turf which was £900 , normal turf for £600. To be honest we can’t afford either without putting ourself under pressure. I was wondering if anyone has better cheaper option which will make it safe for our baby to go out and enjoy the sunshine and where little fingers can’t put things in mouths.

Thank you in advance xxx

You could try sowing grass seeds to make a lawn but may take time to get the same effect as turf. Were the quotes for installing the turf, as I think most of the work will be removing pebbles and creating a suitable surface to put turf or seed on.

The quote wasn’t removing pebbles , we will do that ourselves as a few people want some for their own gardens so hoping must is got rid of that way. The quote for turf was including top soil and installation. The quote for artificial was sand membrane and artificial turf .
I think sowing seeds ourselves will take a while !

Thanks anyway

You can turf it yourself quite easily.

Make sure you water it in daily and the grass will grow pretty quickly.

I would buy some normal turf and lay it yourself. Quite straightforward and can use it quite quickly. I know people love fake lawn, but it is so sterile and provides zero habitat for wildlife. My DD (now nearly 3) has loved spotting insects etc in the grass from about your little boy's age, as well as hoverflies, bees etc on the daisies.

The most dangerous thing would definitely be the pebbles. I would get rid of them, turf it yourself and put a few (low maintenance) plants / shrubs in. Its lovely seeing DD learn about plants / insects etc and the lockdown is definitely a bit easier with her love of the outside!

Youtube how to lay turf! Much cheaper, and people on fb marketplace seem to be selling it cheap (in my area anyway) because obviously people cannot go to them to buy it x
