Common in the UK to give your kids Calpol to put them to sleep?

Hi all,
I am a new member here. I am from Norway and live in Oslo but has spent half my life in the UK (London)

I have had this long disucssion with some friends here in Norway who claims they have UK friends who regulary give their kids Calpol even when they are not sick. This in order to get their kids off to sleep at night.

I refuse to believe this is common practice and i never came across anyone who did this when I lived in the UK (ok, few years ago now but still..... )

The reason for this argument of course is the case of Maddie and the fact that her parents seemed to give her Calpol to sleep better but this is not, by any means a normal thing to do - or is it?

(In Norway I think you would be reported to the child protection unit if you give your kids drugs when they are not sick!)

Didn't we have a doping with Calpol troll thread once ? Funnily some people in Europe use paracetamol suppositories regularly on their kids for the slightest sniffle ... that must be different !

i am quite stunned by this aggressive stance from Mille

and i rarely get snippy , but she is perpetuating this, when she should be apologising for hurting hurly's feelings

Yes maisemor I have a mixed race child and she has long beautiful wild hair. I also tell her she has beautiful hair and so does other people. She is the only child in her Norwegian nursery with wild hair but that is no reason to "tame" and "maintain" it for her to look like everyone else. I prefer to be happy with who she is.

Jeg vet jeg provoserer her men det er også meningen! Nå skal jeg hjem fra jobb, god helg til deg og takk for støtten Tror nok ikke jeg vil bruke dette forumet noe mer!

I know nobody who leaves kids alone, ever, or uses any form of sedative- well except me, 2 of my kids use melatonin as they are asd and will not sleep otherwise (note meltanonin a hormone that is often missing in autistic kids) and we only use that if we're in desperation because it seems so wrong.

Ds2 occasionally gets piriton of an evening as he has itchy skin and the GP prescribed it, even then I wouldn't say it has a significant effect worth bothering with on the sleep front. And indeed, I have been prescribed anti histamines that I refuse to take purely because I hate the soporific effects- why would I impose that on my children?

Something very odd about assuming things about a nation from a hypothetical circumstance that may have arisen in a one off missing child case that nobody actually knows trhe real details of, imo

absolute rubbish

they are just jealous as its soooo much nicer to raise children here than somewhere dark and depressing

she was asking about her own childrens' hair, not labelling an entire race of hair

gods sake

am presuming mille does not straighten/ perm her hair , wear make up etc, as she is 'happy with who she is' and doesn;t want to change / enhance anything a bout herself

at Lulumama

Oh don't mind me. I've got the diagnosis from Professor Mille. "I think it is an identity issue and it is sad that so many black people keep straigtening their hair to look European (the products are banned in norway luckily, or at least some of them)"

I'm taking me and my identity issues off this thread. Blu does have a point.

You crappy UK parents can carry on arguing the toss with Mille about how often you leave your DCs home alone dosed up on paracetomol. Is it (a) daily (b) twice weekly or (c) no more than five times a month?
