DS can’t get rid of cold (6 weeks!)

Hi All,

My DS started with a snotty nose almost 6 weeks ago. His only symptoms are congestion and snot (never had a temperature).
On 9th March I took him to see GP as he was tin ally struggling to feed and had a reduction in wet nappies. GP gave him a once over and wasn’t concerned about him.
The feeding issues have continued in waves so I spoke to the health visitor via a chat on 06/04 - they advised me to speak to GP again.
I had telephone consultation with a nurse practitioner from GP surgery on 07/04 - basically said she’s not too concerned about him but call again if I’m worried.
His breathing still sounds like he’s contested badly, he regularly is blocked up and we are doing our best with saline spray / rubs / olbus oil to manage things but he still finds it difficult to feed and sleep, particularly at night.
I’m a bit worried about physically taking him into the doctors to be examined (my GP surgery is currently the COVID testing hub for our town. I understand that they’re seeing people separately but there will inevitably be people with symptoms in the vicinity.
He is okay in himself during the day, it’s just the congestion and slightly wheezy / congested breathing. No temp and no sign of any of symptom.
I don’t want to be that paranoid first time mother that risks her child getting this virus because he has a cold but I’m also aware 6 weeks feels like a long time not to get over a minor cold
What do you all think?
For info - he’s fine in himself and he’s EBF.

Can you sit in the bathroom with the shower on hot, steam is really good for loosening congestion

Rainwaltz · 17/04/2020 07:22

I do do this! Mostly because if I leave him and have a shower without him he’ll squark because he thinks I’ve gone. It does temporarily help so I do try to do it before a feed or if he’s getting really fussy. He just doesn’t seem to be able to get rid of this cold for good. You would have thought being pretty much in isolation would mean he wasn’t picking up new stuff, right?!

He probably has hayfever ask the dr if you can try an antihistamine

Nasal aspirator works for us to clear any congestion. We have one that you hook up to a vacuum cleaner.

Colds can be quite tricky. Some symptoms like coughing or stuffy nose can last forever even with adults.

Rainwaltz · 17/04/2020 07:55

@slipperywhensparticus interesting thought about hay fever - I haven’t even considered it as I don’t suffer and never have. Would this be the right time of year? Would it still impact him inside? We do go out for a walk most days but other than that we are generally inside or in the garden occasionally but there’s no grass, it’s just a patio.

My hay fever has made an appearance over the last two weeks so could be that, my DS gets really congested at night and I've found using a humidifier with a few drops of snufflebabe helps his breathing sound a lot better.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 17/04/2020 08:16

Hay fever can happen at different times for different reasons. Mine is tree pollen and grass and I have had it for around 4 weeks now. Levels are very high this year. I walked through the cemetery yesterday and spent the rest of the day inside but that was enough to wake up bunged up today with itchy eyes.

Rainwaltz · 17/04/2020 09:00

I will try the humidifier in the bedroom ( que DP moaning about the noise / smell / anything - urgh men). I’ll see if I can get a telephone consult re hay fever - I presume I’d need to speak up a dr to try an antihistamine to rule it in/out for a baby this age?
