Nap Nemesis!

Hello all,

I have a 5 month old (6 months next week!) and he has never been a great napper... for the first few months it was naps in sling or on us / pram only. He's also never been a baby that naps for very long unless in the sling.

However, as he's got a little older we have been putting him into his cot for naps... He still needs help with that usually and requires us to repeat certain phrases/ sing and hold his hand but he's a lot better than he used to be (NEVER napped in the cot!)

However, we have tried everything we have read about to try and extend his naps past 30/35 minutes. It's not a new thing... He's always been a short napper unless in the sling. I've read they have to have exactly the same environment to be able to reach the next sleep cycle and therefore I've tried going in and putting his dummy in / saying the phrases / holding his hand... But it has worked twice ever! When he's in the pram and falls asleep he still wakes up 30 mins later also. We are now trying to give him 4 naps a day and with the 2nd one we are putting the sling on once he wakes up or bouncing on a ball with him to extend it to see if he gets used to a longer nap at that point. However, he always resists and can take 20-30 minutes to go back down in the sling or on the ball. I feel like I should be getting him more sleep although he does not wake up grumpy and seems chirpy most of the time.

Does anyone have a similar experience or advice about this?!

Many thanks 😀

Is he getting a full nights sleep? If he is I wouldn’t worry about it. Some babies are just poor day nappers.

Have a read of this book. It will let you know if it really is a problem and if so, give you some hints on things to adjust Smile

Hi both... His night time sleep is not stable yet. He generally goes 8 hours without wanting any milk so 8-4 then back to sleep until around 7... However, sometimes he is asleep all the time other than the feed whereas some days he wakes much more often wanting a pat or dummy...

I will have a look at that book as have heard good things about the author. I would be interested to know if it is a problem or not as I feel like I've tried so many things!
