Sleepy newborn

Hi all,

This might be a nice problem to have! I gave birth via planned c section on Tuesday to a beautiful baby girl, she has been the dream so far- almost too good- all she seems to do is sleep! She only fusses when her nappy is changed, she’s feeding (expressed breast milk approx 60ml a time every 3 hours on average), dirty and wet nappies appearing.... should I be worried or is this normal? She was 38 weeks if that makes a difference

Did the HV check for jaundice? My DS was very sleepy and had mild jaundice. It didn't need any treatment but sometimes can need some mild light therapy.

They do sleep a lot regardless!

As long as she's rousing for feeds, that's totally normal. They're like this for the first week or so IME, and then start to very slowly perk up a little. 6-12 weeks is when they start to really be more alert. Until then it's sleep-feed-sleep-feed forever Grin

Enjoy it. As long as she’s waking for feeds she’s fine. They are very sleepy at the beginning whilst they begin to adapt to life outside of the womb. They basically sleep and feed. X

Both my girls born by c section slept pretty much constantly for the first 2 weeks, after that was a battle to actually get them to sleep!
Congratulations and enjoy!

userabcname · 10/04/2020 19:33

Yeah my second was like this - very sleepy! He was fine though, always woke to feed. I couldn't believe it as my first had been a nightmare and literally never slept! Enjoy it!

yukka · 10/04/2020 19:39

My 8 month old was like this I think it's fairly common (and enjoyable) .

Then at 3 weeks she 'woke up'. She was a ring but jaundiced, you could barely tell. I used to sit with her by the window whilst she slept and take her outside.

Sunshinedayze · 10/04/2020 19:54

She does feed, but I wouldn’t say she really wakes for a feed, she roots around and can tell she’s hungry, makes all the ques and will feed, flicking between guzzling lots down and falling asleep with the bottle in her mouth! Normally takes her just over an hour to take between 60-90mls which is also loads for her size/age (so she is feeding ok) we left hospital yesderday and no issues re jaundice reported!

It takes them a few days to get going. Mine was sleepy until about 3 days after delivery and then she was like a Tasmanian devil. If you had a c section could she have a little of the meds in her system? I'd enjoy it and hope it lasts! You might be lucky

Did HV check for jaundice? Does she look a tinge orange / yellow? My son was the exact same and the HV took one look at him and sent us to a&e. He ended up having blue light therapy for a week as he was jaundice (common in breastfed babies especially). Not scary but definitely needs to be treated if that's what it is. Xxxx

Check her weight when she's a week old. If she's coming close to losing 10 percent of her birth weight call the maternity unit.

Don't let her sleep more than three hours at a stretch. Feeding every two hours is preferable to three hour intervals.

After a bit of googling we are wondering if it could be codine as I’m still on this for pain relief.... which I’m pretty annoyed about as I wouldn’t be taking the codine if I’d known this as its not reccomended if breastfeeding and this was prescribed by midwife Angry so will stop that and see if it helps

Rousing for feeds at this age is exactly what you describe - routing but reluctant to actually open those eyes, won't cry until starving. I think the media gives us the impression that babies cry when they're hungry, but they don't. They make weird little gremlin noises and wriggle a bit, and only cry/wake up properly as a last resort when they're tiny. Sounds like you're doing just fine.

Hope you're ok without the codeine!

mathanxiety · 11/04/2020 03:38

Don't go from codeine to nothing at all.

Do you have any otc pain reliever?

Sunshinedayze · 11/04/2020 09:32

Yeh I have paracetamol and ibroprofine so just sticking to that religiously and it’s not too bad, as long as I keep moving. She def seems a lot more alert today since I stopped giving her expressed breast milk so will see what midwife says, thank you all ☺️

@Sunshinedayze from your post you could be describing my daughter exactly. Did you ever get any answers? She’s 4 days old.
