Baby with extreme spit up, desperate mum

Sorry this is long...

Hello all, my 4 month old ds has terrible spit up since newborn... he has never been able to sleep on his back due to this... he will easily spit up 8 times after a feed and alot of the time its hours after he has eaten as well. Sometimes big amounts sometimes small, he is on Omeprazole... It has been mostly a "washing problem" as he hadnt been in discomfort as much up until recently.

Recently it has been awful, so much vomit, and it is affecting his daytime sleep, he is waking up during every nap crying and in discomfort then vomiting. He vomits when completely upright, sitting, lying, all positions.

Has anyone experienced this and found anything to help? I have been reading about "nat phos" from Holland and Barrett, has anyone tried this with any success?

Sorry for the rant, im just feeling so helpless as I dont know what to do to help him, would be grateful for any suggestions or experiences.

Also should mention he is breastfed and only fed sitting completely upright.

I just wanted to update this so for everyone who commented and anyone reading this post in the future in case it can help them.

In advance... this is a soppy post, so if you don't like sop stop reading now 😂... but its all true 🙂

... I have to admit, I was dubious about going dairy free because of what I had been told by H.V, but anyway, I went dairy free, the first few weeks he got even worse, then I stopped the soya products that I was eating loads of, and things started improving but still bad sometimes, then I started reading all labels and stopped soya completely even if it only had a tiny bit in it, and .... I HAVE A NEW BABY! 🎉🎈🎊

I am so grateful to everyone for your help, I would never have figured this out without you all, I just kept getting told he had reflux and given new medication. Its sad that I was completely let down by the system at such a difficult time, but as cheesy as it sounds (aww I miss cheese so much 🧀 😂)writing this post asking for help has changed our lives... I didn't realise until now how bad things were, I was in tears so many times every day trying to deal with a baby that was so unhappy, and so sick that I could seem to do nothing to help.

Now... the number of wet nappies he has per day have at least doubled as he isn't vomiting all his milk up, he is a happier and more settled baby, he can wear one outfit most of a day without needing a change (sometimes lol), I can take him for a walk in the pram now and he is happy the whole time, no vomiting and screaming, doesn't scream in discomfort anymore, we can cuddle him without fear of what will happen, sounds awful but we mostly held him at arms length before 😔, he is sleeping better, in fact he now sleeps 7:30pm until 7:30am without a peep out of him, I am not crying in desperation every day and his brother will play with him more now because he isn't worried he will be sick on him. I'm sure there are lots of other changes for the better that I can't think of right now, but they are the main ones....

So from me, my baby, my carpets, my sanity, and my washing machine, thank you all 💗💜💗

I'm so pleased for you! I've been dairy free since October for my DD and we're weaning without dairy now she's coming up to 11 months. There are so many resources available if you're on Facebook and Instagram loads of support from other mums.
Like you we were also told it couldn't be CMPA. And as baby was gaining weight nobody was worried (apart from me!), there's just so little knowledge about breastfeeding because hardly anyone does it that the diagnosis isn't easy.
I've since challenged cows milk through breastfeeding twice and both times her symptoms returned. I've also recently challenged cows milk directly to her, half a teaspoon gave her hives! So I feel like I was right all along! Last week we started the milk ladder and failed the first level so we're off it again now.
Make sure you get a referral to a dietician to help ensure you're getting the correct nutrients and you child does too once you introduce solids.
Well done for finding the allergy! And dropping soya- we're ok with that thankfully!

Thank you @thebigthreefive and thank you for that info. You are right, not much info on it where there should be.
Yes dietician has been in touch for a consultation and said that she wants me to remain dairy and soya free for the next 3 months and said its best to continue bf as babies don't normally like the d.f formula.
We are due to start weaning next week so she sent lots of d.f weaning info and also prescribed calcium for me. So thats been a great help.

Sorry you haven't had success with it yet. Hopefully you don't have long to wait before trying again and next time goes better x

Hi candystar, I just read your post and wondered if this might apply to my boy. There are some differences as he is worse at night in terms of pain and distress and the vomiting has never been as bad as you experienced (only up to 10-12 times a day). He turned 6 months today and recently was diagnosed with acid reflux and put on gaviscon. It has helped so I’m assuming gaviscon will continue to be the right thing for him but he does vomit still with gaviscon. He’s breastfed too. I’ve been reluctant to change my diet as I’m already coeliac so gluten and dairy and soya free would be a nightmare! Any advice? Thanks

Candystar18 · 05/06/2020 14:55

Hi @Mummyongin I'm really sorry your son is going through that... its so stressful isn't it. It could well be dairy.

I'm a complete novice about dairy allergy, I only found out because of the advice I got on here, but hopefully one of the other ladies with more experience will comment with some advice for you.

Its a tough call because I can imagine how tough it would make your diet 😔
I was really dubious about it before I tried but the difference is unbelievable. Could you maybe try dairy and soya free for a few weeks and see if you notice a difference? And if you find he is improving then try and eat some soya and if he's fine then it would just be dairy free?
Soya is worse than dairy fyi, its in everything! Lol. But I have found a lot of good foods that don't have either so if you do decide to do this, i would be happy to dm you a list of things that I found good.
