Baby Sleeping Bag Advice Please

Hi everyone

Hope you're all keeping well during these strange times.

I'd like some help with baby sleeping bags please. My DD is 11 weeks old and seems to have already outgrown her 0-6 months sleeping bags (from Asda and Morrisons). I did a quick search online and found a few threads from other people experiencing the same thing, and suggesting that the cheaper, supermarket sleeping bags seemed to come up shorter than those from GroBag and JoJoMB etc. I have been looking online for alternatives to buy as there's no way she'll be in these current bags for another three months (and I think that 6 months+ will probably be too big for now) but have noticed that the actual length of the sleeping bags are never listed, so I've no idea what to go for.

I was wondering if you lovely people could let me know where you got your sleeping bags/what brand they are and have a quick measure of the length for me please?

Thanks in advance!

My DD uses marks and Spencer sleeping bags for her DS. You need to look at the tog rating too, not just the size. She got some 18-24 month sizes in October when he was 15 months old, and he's just now moved on to pyjamas. He's a big boy and they were always sized right.

Some companies do 3-9 months I think

Not much use to you now because they’re shut, but TK Maxx have lots of longer sleeping bags. When they reopen might be worth a look there or online.

We had Sainsbury's and M&S ones - they always seemed long for tall DS.

If the sleeping bag was massively too long I used to tuck the excess into the bottom of the cot like you would tuck a blanket in.

I’ve put away the sleeping bags my youngest has grown out of now so can’t measure sorry (they’re in the garage roof). There is a safety issue to consider, that they need to be the right weight for the size of sleeping bag, to ensure their head doesn’t slip through the neck as they could suffocate, it obviously needs to be the right tog for the temperature of the room as well as someone was mentioned up thread.
I found this awkward because my daughter is long but struggled to gain weight when she was younger due to reflux. So it doesn’t matter if there is a lot of excess length, but as I said it does matter if they haven’t reached the minimum weight for that size.

IME it is true grobag etc are much longer - you could try getting some second hand on FB buy and sell, etc?

Megan2018 · 06/04/2020 10:54

Crikey! What centile is your baby? Mine is still in 0-6 at almost 7 months and she’s average length (roughly 50th centile length), mine are all grobag and NEXT so they must be considerably longer I guess.
I have got Grobags in the next size up ready to go but they are enormous and I can’t see me using them until 8/9 months

WhateverHappenedToBathPearls · 06/04/2020 10:59

Can't measure as they're in the loft, but the Grobag ones always lasted us at least as long as the age range suggested. I got them all second hand off eBay as they are very expensive new!

MIL bought us one from vertbaudet which was very pretty but absolutely tiny.

Currently have a sleeping DS18 months on me in a Grobag and I can confirm they are much longer.
I find the John Lewis own brand ones come up a good size
All supermarket ones are definitely smaller and shrink easily in the wash

wasIlikethis30yearsago · 06/04/2020 11:44

Grobags are very long and the Ergo ones are enormous.

jmacat86 · 06/04/2020 14:23

We have this issue too, DS is also 11weeks and the only sleeping bags that fit are Little White company, JJMB and GroBag. All the supermarket sleeping bags are too small both in length and also in the chest/neck area.
Second hand from Facebook marketplace has been our saviour without having to fork out a small fortune

Pentium85 · 06/04/2020 14:32

As PP has mentioned, Grobags can be pricey so keep your eye on Amazon. They often have special offers on. I got a pack of two for £23

Hi everyone

Thank you for all of your responses offering advice and recommendations, I really appreciate it, it's been very helpful. I will take a look at the various suggestions made.

@megan2018 she is around average length too, I think it's just that the sleeping bags I have are quite short rather than DD being super long! I did wonder if i have a super long baby but it seems not to be the case Grin

Thanks again everyone.

I purchased this one from amazon last week not realising it was 0-6 and not 6-12 🥴

This is my 6 month old in it he currently wears 6-9 and is going into 9-12 month clothes so he is bigger than average! It fits him with a little growing room and washed well ☺️

I have two 2.5 tog ones. One is a cheaper one - George I think. The other is John Lewis.

I have no other comparisons but the John Lewis own brand one is a good 6 inches if not more longer and wider too. It is a much nicer cotton whereas the George one is almost duvet like which has shrunk in the wash. You can tell the difference in quality, though the George one is nice its just so small!

My baby is 9 weeks of typical size 😊
