4 month old kicking legs in crib

Hi all,

A bit of a weird one if you can help. My (nearly) 4 month old kicks up his legs when he is sleeping in his cot (which is our room) and slams them into the mattress for brief periods during the night and we cannot fathom why he does it. He really wacks his legs into the mattress with some force. He has never suffered from wind and we burp him three times during feeds...he is chatty, smiley, progressing well but this has really perplexed my partner and I. Obviously its extremely loud but mainly I'm worried about him and whether he is getting decent sleep/hurting his legs.

Has anyone had this before? I can't find anything online...he does sleep on a cozymumma pillow and I'm wondering if he might be trying to move himself off of it? We originally used it upon recommendation but now I'm not sure it's a good idea.

Thanks.

My baby did (and still does!) the same thing. We put it down to the fact he just bloody loves kicking things.

Is he properly asleep when he does it? Mine would do it when awake to keep himself amused/because he wanted to. So much so that we moved him into his proper crib over the weekend because my DH Was sure he would eventually manage to upturn the Moses basket with the foot slamming.

Kicking can be an instinctual reflex if he’s struggling to breath or move his head. Try putting him in without the pillow and see if it helps.

All mine have done it Grin think it's one of those bizarre things that kids do for no apparent reason Wink

My baby did it and husband suffers from restless legs - I put a bar of soap under the sheet at the bottom of his crib and it seemed to calm him down. Husband also sleeps with a bar of soap at his feet - not sure why this helps but it seems to.

My son did this at the same age. I presumed it was a sensory thing he enjoyed doing as he was he trying to know his legs?

MySonIsAlsoNamedBort · 06/04/2020 01:48

My baby is the same age and does the exact same thing. Think it's completely normal.

Lynda07 · 06/04/2020 02:12

They all did it, I love the kittens. Honestly, they do.

BigusBumus · 06/04/2020 02:13

Yes all 3 of mine did it.

Ilovethekittehs · 06/04/2020 09:41

Thanks everyone! It's nice to know it's normal! Really reassuring, stay safe.

Yeah my son did this, so noisy it kept everyone awake I moved him into his own room at that point

welshweasel · 06/04/2020 09:55

Perfectly normal but please get rid of the pillow, its unnecessary and increased sids risk

Twistering · 06/04/2020 10:10

Mine is 9 months and still does it...usually when trying to get herself off to sleep. Makes a big thump and when she was in the Snuzpod it used to make it rock loads - I wondered if that was why she did it, but sounds v common anyway.

Ilovethekittehs · 06/04/2020 11:14

I can confirm we have removed the pillow! He actually slept better after, can't for the life of me remember why we used the stupid thing in the first place! He doesn't nap with a pillow so it doesn't make any sense. First time mum, lesson learnt!

Hi Lynda, I have a very small family (no children) and my friends dont have children, so no, I was never around babies!

@Lynda07 so rude and so patronising!

Let me guess you just knew everything? 🥱. Move along if you can't be nice.

OP my 9 month old still does it! Sounds like he's about to put the cot through actually!

Ilovethekittehs · 06/04/2020 17:15

@SpillTheTeaa something about this lockdown has made some posters far more rude than the normal bashing you see on here 😂 I don't mind.

DS1 used to do this - it drove us mad all that thwacking up and down. He's now 13 and lives for football - I think he started practising earlyWink
